Actually if you keep up to date an older device it will slow it down. In my experience do not update the software and keep and update only necessary apps. About increasing the power of processor that is a bit dangerous since it might fry your device just remove any annimations keep your phone simple and clean youll be good.
Hope this helps someone

Sometimes the phones become slower because the manufacturers need to sell their new models, so they slow down their old ones.

1.Delete some apps.
Chances are you don't really need super Mario run or the editors choice apps.
2.Some apps leave files behind .Hunt your SD card or storage for junk files
3.Clear Cache
4.Free up some space .If you can't delete anything then transfer the files you don't use to another SD card or store it in cloud.
5.DU Battery saver and Greenify isn't gonna do anything. The gain will be insignificant and barely noticeable
6.Remove a few apps after specific intervals and dont clear all apps.It can consume more RAM
7.Full Brightness, 4K recording, Hotspot,Using Internet 24×7, gaming too much, Facebook addiction.
Try to use them less frequently asked
8.When battery is low use the Power Saving modes.Samsung's Ultra Power Saver is godsend
9.Root the phone at the cost of reduced lifespan and potentially rendering it useless
10.Using multiple apps at same time .Use it sparingly

Im still rocking a one plus one since june 2015. My phone has been fast since the beginning. I only clean cache maybe once a week and thats it. I have tried some custom roms, right now I am on AOSP rom 8.1. My phone still is very responsive and fast. I can play all games with little restriction.

Two days ago I re-installed the stock official 6.0.1 ROM on my Galaxy S5 Snapdragon and it's at least twice as fast as it was on the custom ROM I was on for the past few months (Nemesis Reborn v5). If you want stability, everything to work, and the best battery life, using the OEM's firmware is the best bet. Also keeping daily used apps in RAM as mentioned in this video.

I think most of the suggestions are fine but I'm going to have to disagree with using data saver, if you have an old device that is already struggling to load web pages then compression is likely to just make it worse since that data obviously needs to be decompressed so any tangible benefits will just be cancelled out by the processor just not being fast enough... Plus from my experience data saver gives fairly poor results, on average it only saves about 2-15% of data.

While I've not tested it on an old device something that may actually work is installing a browser with addon support such as firefox, which will allow you to install an adblocker and even better with the use of uBlock Origin you can block large media elements by a set amount and will also have a far greater impact in lowering data usage, a low value such as 50kb to 300kb will decrease the size of a page from as large as 15mb down to as little as 60kb meaning your device will have to load much less to get to the content you care about.
