The jowls are those areas of the face down by the chin that produce a pleat and sometimes are also called the marionette lines. This is due to the loss of the contours of the fat compartments of the face which are just above those areas. What we do in facelifts is we actually will identify a ligament on both sides of the marionette lines and cut that ligaments so that the skin can then be pulled posterity and superiorly in a more pleasing fashion.
