Something I've always found interesting about the future timeline is that it's Vegeta's bloodline that ends up becoming the last line of defense for Earth instead of Goku's. Maybe I'm thinking too deeply into this but I think that's really cool.

This says more about GOHAN than Trunks.
Each of the Saiyans are similar. Goku Chased the memory of this Grandfather Gohan, Vegeta Chased the memory of Goku, Trunks Chased the memory of Vegeta.
and so on, Gohan never chased anything. He hated the fight, all he ever wanted was peace.
