As a historian, when you said the name William Strickland, by ears perked up. I actually went back to make sure I heard it correct. He also designed President James K. Polk's tomb as well. He built our state capital in Nashville. He said it was his crowing achievement and his entombed within the walls.

I have been here a few times, and this sight is just humbling. To think our first President is laying only feet from the gates is awsome.

His death was so avoidable but doctors of that age still believed in blood letting. He was so dehydrated from not being able to swollow that the last blood letting came out thick.

As a boy in the 1960's I stood a few feet away from the two sarcophagi at Mt. Vernon. A few days later I stood a few feet away from the flame and grave of JFK at Arlington. These two memories seem to be joined forever in my mind.

Very nice ! Washington was 6'2- very very tall for that time! He had to duck under some of the doorways.
