YouTuber Derails Train for a Video

Internet fame, something some people are willing to do anything for. Today, we look at a story of a Nebraska teen who derailed a train in the name of content. Buckle up.

The thing that strikes me is that, YES, a misaligned switch CAN derail a train, BUT a misaligned switch isn't the ONLY way to derail a train. A bad rail, faulty wheel, a foreign object, landslides, tornadoes, a hotbox, ANY of these can derail a train, so him saying it was a misaligned switch, to me, as a railfan, is oddly specific. If this was TRULY an accident, he shouldn't have known what happened.

And we should be glad this was a coal train, and not one carrying crude oil or chemicals. Yes, trains carry hazardous cargo all the time, and a spill of that cargo, even from a single train car, can be catastrophic. Trains aren't like cars. They can't stop on a dime or swerve to the side. A train wreck can look like a tornado hit the area, or worse! So it disgusts me that this person felt it was alright to derail a train just for views. I'm sure the towns of Lac-Megantic and East Palestine would have some strong words for this teen.

In 1963, some boys intentionally derailed a Southern Pacific Coast Daylight passenger train near Northridge, CA. After they were caught, they not only got prison time, they got lifetime special probation upon release. I think that would be appropriate here. EDIT: got the year wrong

Train engineer here - His story smelled like complete BS from the moment he began to speak, it would have not been possible to set a car out of a train and put the train back together without lining that switch back + the dispatcher woulda noticed something was up when the track still showed as "occupied" once that train which did the set out cleared that block of track. He was also way too "helpful" to the investigator. If he was hellbent on doing this, he should have just got his clip and boogied outta there.

It's not just 14 years in prison. It's possible the train company could sue him for damages. The cost of a train being derailed is massive. He could spend the rest of his life after prison paying on such a civil judgment.
