It's always so interesting to hear the difference in codes between different areas. A hospital I was shadowing at used code violet for an agitated or aggressive person, while code white was essentially pre code blue, where a person is showing signs of a rapid decline or change in status, but it isn't a full scale emergency.
There was also code OB, which I only heard once, but it meant that someone went into labor outside of the labor and delivery unit.

You’re not immature… it’s what happens when Eric Cartman makes the codes and the whole town of South Park nods in agreement

At my hospital, code orange was Marjorie Stoneman Douglass mass shooting. I'll never forget that.

The hospital I work at had something we call "Code Grey" last year which is considered a mass loss of internal systems. Our internal system had gotten hacked and so we basically had to shut down all internal notes literally everything digitally kept pertaining to patient care in hopes our site wouldn't be affected. I was called in randomly one Saturday evening to help manually print patient medication profiles in case we lost access to everything digitally and for a few weeks we did everything on paper and manually. It was a HUGE shock to our system and a strain on everyone. I'm also trained on how to deal with code Browns as I mix chemotherapy 😅 gotta love hazardous spills!

For my hospital (New Zealand):
Code blue= cardiac arrest
Code red= acutely concerning medical situation but no cardiac arrest yet
Code orange= call for security
Code pink= pediatric emergency

Code pinks (obstetrical emergency) were the ones that always made my heart thump when I heard it as a patient.

I'm in a hospital rn, and the speakers said that there was a code white in the pharmacy. I think someone tried to steal some medications and then got mad lol

In Australia Code Brown means: is reserved for shorter-term emergencies, such as train crashes or bushfires, and during the pandemic...is aimed at relieving pressure on the health system. During a code brown, hospitals can cancel their staff’s leave to ensure an adequate workforce is on hand.
They can also defer less urgent services.

We use code orange for spills and code yellow for external disasters then code grey for weather disasters and purple for when the power gets knocked out

It’s funny how everything is expressed as though it’s super shocking. “CODE BROWN!!!”

Code pink- child abduction
Code purple - non patient (visitors, staff) has injured themselves, fallen somewhere in hospital property. ER staff is required to run and find patient (usually announced when code purple is called. A ambulance stretcher is ready for the nurses to take with them to the location of the purple. There is also a first aid kit/emergency supplies in a bag placed on top. The person will either be taken back to the er, or if they have cleared no injuries, no distress - then they sign a form stating that they refused treatment at that time.

In some hospitals, I've heard code silver used for missing seniors, typically with cognition problems.

My hospital has switched to plain language codes. The only "code" we still use is "Adult Code Blue". We use "fire alarm", "Code OB", "Missing Person".
I do appriciate as "code" can trigger that fight or flight and may confuse people. Some of these also affect patients and families so it helps them make safety decisions as well.

Hey, I asked this question a couple of years ago but it never got answered. When you were a rheumatology fellow, why were you working in the MICU? Were you moonlighting?

We use codes in my hospital also. It just is anxiety provoking when the call a code blue. I always stop what I’m doing and wait to hear the location. I’m a nurse and if it’s on my floor then we go immediately to help. Code crimson is maternal bleeding.

At my hospital where I went to until just recently because of turning 18 there was a code gold for very specific reasons, I had code gold called a lot and people came rushing in. It was for sensory and autism/adhd/ anxiety overloads so the nurses would come in to find me either sitting up or laying down just crying and moving about if I was sitting up my legs would be moving if I was laying down I would be tossing and turning
