If the 11.9voltage is the external can I not just say that R(the unknown resistor)= 11.9 - the resistors in parallel? Or am I obligated to use the formula V=IR

Quick question, it seems to me there are 2 equations when doing these related calculations... V=I/R and V=I*R.
I would really like to know which one do I use in which situation.

how did you do, you have 12emf=0, 5(R+0, 2) then you ended up getting 24 how?
