Hey Mark and Steve! Great episode as usual. Thanks to your tutorials I have started to gain serious speed when working in Final Cut Pro x and I love it.

I have a suggestion on this topic of proxy. Basically what I do when I have a lot of video material to edit and know I am going to have to edit on the road with proxy is this: I put the loads of terabytes of material on the raid I want to use. I then create a new library in FCPX where ever I want, could be on the raid as well or on my laptop. NOW, when I import the material in FCPX I choose LEAVE IN PLACE in the import window. I also click the Create Proxy Media check box because that way, all the big files will stay outside the library and all the proxy files will be created INSIDE the library. For me thats amazingly flexible.

This way I can simply unplug the raid when I need to go on my happy adventures in the mountains or what have you and just take the library with the proxies with me, like you are saying. If you put the library on the RAID as well (as I did on my most recent project because I did not have enough space on my laptop) you can simply make a copy of the library to a small portable hard drive (in the finder) and you will be able to just pop that hard drive into your laptop and start editing with the proxies. And as you have mentioned before, the best part is that when you get back and you want to use your original media again you just reconnect the RAID and you can continue working with it.

I find that this setup gets me going fast, gives me a lot of flexibility and I do not have to do the steps with changing the setting for where I store my media. You see?

Anyway! Just wanted to share this. Thank you for all your great videos and keep em coming.

PS. Let me also share a little trick that I think you will love if you do not already know it. I found it last week: when you are transforming, cropping or trimming a clip in the viewer, you can quickly switch between the different tools in a popup box by cntrl-klicking in the viewer. Try it out! I love those kinds of workflow tricks. You should make a video with your top ten quick and easy tips and tricks in FCPX. Five each! And include my tip if you want. :) Cheers!

Hi guys, thanks for the great tutorials! I get the following window message "Some storage locations for the library "X" are unavailable" after ejecting the external hard drive where the original media is located, and after having created/imported proxy files in to the library in FCPX (10.1.4) on my laptop. Why is that?It is as if the proxy media on my laptop is only available to me when the external hard drive is connected to the laptop. I just want to be able to edit in proxy on my laptop without any external drives. I'd very much appreciate a reply. Thank you

Are there any limitations to use proxy media? Can you use it with anything - keying (green screen), effects, transitions, etc.?
