The tool wall is also a good way for your spouse to see how big of a tool collector you’ve become, something you can’t say when tools are in a box 😂

So as long as we put all the tools we buy into chests we are being shelf-less?

Man I am with you 100% on that! I used to work at a huge cabinet shop and I used to make fireplace surrounds. I did have a tool chest then that would travel with me. I work in my shop now and I have a tool wall. So much more convenient than bending down and pulling out tools everytime I want to use one. I do have some ideas for the future and that is to have upright tool cabinets that are on big carts that roll around based on where I need them. I do handtool woodcarving and furniture and cabinet building. My goal is to have a section where I have the various carving benches and then a completely different area where I do the hand tool joinery and construction. With rolling tool cabinets I can move my tools around me while I work without having to dig in chests. I need a pottery section, metal working, and rock cutting and polishing and of course a sharpening and tool restoring section too! I do all that now under the porch of my shop. I want those separate sections to keep the dust isolated away from my carving and joinery tools. I really enjoy seeing your set up and Rex's too. Both of you guys and Paul Sellers are all brilliant in my opinion.

I’ve found that my tool chest also allows me to store my tools in the unconditioned shop without excessive rust.

Impressive collection.
I lean toward being an inclusive tool worker.
I have tool boxes, tool chests, tool cabinets, tool belts, and tool rooms.
The tools I use the most are on tool walls. With 5 working shops I have a variety of tool walls. The ability to see the tools and the inability to hide tools in a box means I spend less time packing and unpacking a tool chest.
Then I realized I have 5 walkin in tool chests

Will you ever make a video on how you made that plane wall?

My grandpa has a tool wall and I’ve always been attracted to it because I hate drawers I think they’re messy but I also filled up with walls they’re easy accessible and it looks incredible

I plan on using both. The wall above my workbench will have french cleats for a modular design. I could build a rack for my hand planes, a chisel holder, shelves, boxes, you name it I could make it and put it on the french cleats. Using that spot to store my most used tools, like 3 or 4 planes (realistically that’s all I typically use), my brace bits and drills, chisels, and mallets. The rest of my tools will be in a tool chest.

But this won’t be just any tool chest either. It’s going to be able to transform into a work bench for when I’m not working at home. It will have spots in it for some of the tools on the wall so that way I don’t have a bunch of duplicate tools never getting used.

An alternative idea I thought of was building the tool chest with cleats on it, so It can be on the wall opened up (similar to how the studley tool chest opened) and be able to hang above my bench like that, so all my tools are accessible right where I need them. From there, the cleats on the box would act as handles to help me lug around 100 pounds of hand tools.

I have a tool chest and I've used a tool wall, but my current favorite is the tool cart.

Working on my tool wall now. Not as much space as you have, only 3x3 feet with two 3x1.5 side walls. But then again, I don’t have one (or 2) of every tool known to man. 😊

As a mechanic I practice both. I keep a large tool box for all of my hand tools and keep power tools on the wall. It leaves me room in both places to build my arsenal all while having a place for everything.

You're not worried about someone in your family stealing your tools? Are you certain that a certain little plane hasn't walked out of the shop with Lady

@chopwithchris found a really cool tool chest a while back I think he made a couple of shorts but that was it. That would a cool chest to build.

Arguably, a tool cabinet keeps your tools MORE within reach, since they wouldn’t be spread out over a 5’x4’ or larger surface, but condensed into a 3’x2.5 area with a multi-layered surface.

I have seen tools fall off tool walls, for some things, no big deal, but for others, like my digital calipers a fall can spoil calibration. Those tools are in my three Kennedy tool boxes. And, no, I don't need three tool boxes but I want three tool boxes.
