Growing Elephant Garlic. Easy to grow annual or perennial. Two different ways to grow elephant garlic, today I plant cloves for an annual crop and for perennial plants. Related to leeks, they have a mild garlic flavour and are ideal for cooking where you want a gentle garlic taste.

About Us.
I share our organically managed homestead, called Byther Farm, with my loving partner, Mr J and our cat, Monty.
We are a fifty-something couple who live on a smallholding in Monmouthshire, Wales. We are going green and creating a gentler, cleaner and more healthy life for our family.
There is a large organic kitchen garden with no dig gardening raised beds and young food forest in which to grown our fruit and vegetables.
I'm currently exploring permaculture farming as a way of life.
We keep chickens, Aylesbury ducks, Khaki Campbell ducks and turkeys.

I let a few elephant garlic run to flower, they grow about 6 feet tall and have spectacular flower heads that the bees love.

would love a video where you talk about what it's like to keep turkeys. Your experiences, dos and donts, recommendations, etc.

Thanks for video. I bought a pack with 10 garlic plants back in March.
9 were regular garlic but one was, I think, Elephant garlic. I got seeds from the Elephant Garlic plant and also from one of
the normal garlic plants. I picked the seeds from both. The elephant garlic in particular had so many seeds so I only got about half out of the flowers (I don't think it's an exaggeration to say I have close to 100 seeds stored, many of the flowers/ovaries had 6 seeds!). The rest of the flowers, I shredded using my hands on top of a pot with soil. About a week later, there are probably around 50-60 little garlic plants growing there looking great! There's also 1 little regular garlic plant growing where the regular garlic flowers where! I read these were hard to germinate, sounds like I got lucky!

I might try growing them this year. They do look interesting and sound tasty.

I planted the bulbils and they produce a round bulb like an onion, but they taste very nice. I guess it is time for me to plant garlic this weekend, since I am a week or so behind you weather wise.

just saw some elephant garlic at my local grocers. After research Ive heard its much more mild than the store bought softnecks. Is there an equally large elephant sized garlic with a full flavor profile you recommend? very informative video thanks !

Nice Liz. I grow my elephants to make a single round the first year (about a golf ball size - or just bigger) then plant these to make the cloves the 2nd year.
Never had a lot of success with leaving a cloved bulb in the ground - as you say, they like the room to grow, Hope it works for you!

None of the elephant garlic vids I've watched discuss whether the cloves take 2 years to make a full head -- this is what I'm attempting to discover

We love the alliums and have way more rain than plants need, so to get a firm start I planted 192 small elephant garlic cloves under a low polytunnel in a naturally wicking bed, and close planted about 400 pips in flats in the heated high tunnel for planting out in spring :) ...am I bothering too much to cover alliums? I did note Red Gardens' "Bad Year for Onions" video from Ireland, and specifically in your opinion do flat-leaved alliums weather the wet better than onions?

Ha, Ha... Those turkeys are following you around like a dog. I do hope they didn't dig up the cloves you just planted! I didn't realize one could leave the bulbs in the ground for a second year (or more?), somehow that bit of knowledge missed me. (Or I forgot it.) Thanks for sharing. Today is a good day! (Even though it is raining...

Thank you liz. Can I also use just normal shop bought garlic.
I'll have to look online where I can buy elephant garlic from.
The turkeys are so sweet, and very inquisitive.
Wow that elephant garlic is huge. 💟💟
