*Hero's Regret: Shadows of Victory (Work in progress)*



A gargantua loomed over the village I had made the place of my exile. A
being of rock and stone and ether. Pure elements animated by magic.
Magic unsealed by unwitting bandits.

The blows that came from all around me paused. The bandits were cowed by
a much greater threat. I rose and unsheathed my sword. I stepped
forward as they fled from the foreboding colossal. Until a hand pulled
at my shoulder. My only friend in this place.

"Sylvie, don't."

"I'll be fine, Marek."

"No, you won't. I saw how you just let those ruffians beat you. You
can't fight."

"I've beaten this thing before in the war. I know how to deal with
them."

"Without fighting back? That thing will kill you if you just stand
there."

"I won't. Gargantuas aren't people. Just elements willed by the malice
of chaos magic."

"Still... Promise me you'll come back."

"I will"

His hand loosened and I shot forward. My body was light. I can do
this. Power long dormant surged through my veins. The ground started to
crack with each step. Shockwaves grew as my speed cleaved through the
wind itself.

The gargantua seemed to notice my approach. It paused in demolishing the
sealing temple and turned to face me in slow rumbling steps. I would reach it first.



I smirked. Too slow.



But then the lower parts of its body started to sprout bumps all over. Rock turned plastic as it morphed into vaguely humanoid shapes. They sprinted at me as soon as they fell to the ground.

A chill ran down my spine and I started to feel heavy again. I steeled myself.


'Not people'


They closed on me quick but with my momentum I cleaved through three with the first strike. They crumbled into yet smaller pieces as they fell. The vorpal nature of my blade meant that I would cut both puppet and string with each blow.

The others quickly closed in. Behind, left, right and front. I dispatched them just as easily. Whirling, twirling. Cutting, slashing, crushing.



Not people. Just malice and stone. No complicated ideology. No families to mourn. Just a landslide to be stopped, a flood contained.

A weight collided into me from behind. I tumbled into the dirt as a particularly stocky golem tried to pin me down. With a swift kick I sent it flying into a group of its friends instead, stalling their advance. Rushing forward to capitalise, I crushed two downed golems underfoot. Two more still standing I bisected. By that time, the stocky golem from before had stood up again.

I raised my sword, the sheen on the flat of it catching the crimson of the setting sun. I flinched. But only briefly before slashing the blade through its ‘neck’.



The crimson color remained however. The sword dripped with blood.

“What on earth??” I said, eyes widening.

The decapitated rock head rolled into view, now looking decidedly less rock-like.
