Federer may one day lose certain records (grand slams, week at #1, etc) but he's absolutely the 'father' of 21st century tennis. He kick started, unintentionally, a massive boom period because of his playing style, unmatched success(es), and two-decades-long consistency - not to mention what a nice freakin' guy, too.

Those that follow(ed) whether from a 1/2 generation later (nadal, novak, murray, delpo) to the next genners we see today all play to reach the same level of fame, accomplishment, and popularity.. the aforementioned names are his de facto 'children' (and next gen 'grandchildren') in a sports world that moves ever-so quickly around the entire planet.

Glad I'm alive to see such a living sports legend :)
