Great video Mark and the images. I got my hands on the 85mm Batis today and it really is a sweet lens! As I own the Voigtlander 15mm MK III and Batis 25mm f/2 I can put up with that little extra weight in my bag so I have decided to go for the G Master 85mm

This lens is on my list. I would like to try out the manual focus first before making a decision. That's an important feature for me.

Only wished to own that 85mm f1.4 GM lens. 😯

Thanks for the review. I like the concept of not having to work so hard for the bokeh, but from the images they do not appear to be dramatically grater than the 90mm. So I might still opt for the Sony over the batis, but for now I am comfortable waiting. Thanks again for the review.

Great video!

I saw at around 2:40 that the bokeh on the left hand side does not quite make a full circle. In my experience with Sony mirrorless this happens when you use the electronic shutter at higher shutter speeds 1/1000 and above. My rule of thumb is if aperture is wide open and speed is close or over 1/250 to use fully mechanical shutter.

Electronic shutter comes in handy in low light when shutter speeds fall down. At lower seeds electronic shutter does not seem to clip bokeh as it does at faster shutter speed.

I think Sony identify this as possible issue with electronic shutter in the manual somewhere.

PS I just saw this is f/2, 1/200 and iso 8000 shot. It s strange to see this effect of bokeh clipping then. Do you know if electronic shutter may be the culprit?

Hi Mark, do you find your 85mm GM has loose aperture blades? I mean not really "loose", but some blades tend to have a noticeable gap with the one next to them, especially when you have the lens upright and look into it, the gravity will make that gap more obvious. Thanks for this amazing video by the way.

I've the Sony 90mm macro which I love so I can't bring myself to buy the 85 1.4 because I think the 90mm is great for portrait shots and I shouldn't waste my money on the 85. I'd love to get it though!

Does the eye and face AF work with the original A7, A7S and A6000?

I would love to see Nikkor 85/1.4G vs Sony GM. I saw on Matt Gringer channel, that Nikkor does great job with bokeh even stopped down to f/4.0.

Hi Mark. Do you think this is the best 85 mm lense in the market right now? What about the autofocus? Is it quick? Thanks! :)

The GM is not sharp at f1.4 ! But from f2 specially from f2.8 it’s very sharp.
The Zeiss Batis is sharper than the GM at f1.8 but the GM have better bokeh, contrast and micro contrast.
Some times the Batis is too prefer just for that reason, portraits of young people and women’s can be more flattering with the Batis.
So i have them both!
