My grandparents used to live in Lake Point Tower and had a bird's-eye view of Navy Pier. The building is totally self-sufficient, with its own private grocery store for residents and other types of retail, and on-site laundry services.

On the third floor is an outdoor park that runs along the perimeter atop the parking garage. It has small ponds, walking paths, and grills.

On the 70th floor was a small restaurant at the time, which I believe may now be open to club members. But it was for residents only.

The building had ten elevators that I remember. One bank of elevators served floors 1 to 42. A second bank of four elevators served floors 42 to 68. And then one elevator served floors 68 to 70 for the restaurant on top, which offered 360° views of the city.

Plus, there was a massive, oversized freight elevator. (Used for moving house or if you own a dog, etc...)

I was lucky enough to be up there, and the view was spectacular. A great place to take photographs of the Hancock building and the entire lakefront.

Upon its completion, the building became the tallest residential tower in the world.

And the tallest condo tower in the world until 1993.

Its a beautiful building. I can’t believe it was built in 1968!

The building looks like a 3D fidget spinner.

And they obviously designed the building with an unconventional shape to maximize the number of units that had waterfront views. A premium piece of real estate for a building with no tall structures between it and shoreline on 3 sides of the site.

I'm assuming that money changed hands in order to let this building remain, before they changed the law to ban any similar projects.

I’m sure the city didn’t realize the zoning was a mistake until after completion 💸😏

During a field trip to Chicago in Junior high in 1968, we snuck into this building. Specular views...a golf course, swimming pool, and until they bulldozed the lakefront airport (Meigs field) you could watch airplanes and helicopters taking off below you

It was the tallest apartment-only building in the world from 1968-1993.

It‘s a good thing to protect everybody‘s right to a view of and a stay close to nature.

Very ahead of its time in 1968.
Still looks new.

Fun fact: the circular hole you can see in the ground at certain angles in this video is the site of a planned tower called the Chicago Spire, a skyscraper that never ended up being built and, if it was finished, would be the tallest building in the world at the time it was completed

And the building is slowly settling, so that the walls and floors as you get further from the center are sagging to the point that the floors have to be re-leveled. We almost bought a unit there in the late 90's, glad we didn't.

This building also inspired the design of the Burj Khalifa.

My aunt lived on the 45th floor of Lake Point Tower. All the apartments are on the periphery of the building's curving, 3-petal facade. Her view and the self-sufficiency of the building were remarkable. It's a masterpiece of residential architecture.
