'Serve +1a' | Federer's favorite serve play but with a twist!

Roger Federer's favorite serve play is called "Serve +1", because it lets him follow up his serve with a forehand as often as possible. In this video we add a twist that Federer, Rafa, and a lot of other pros use to make the play even more effective.

We'll call the updated play "Serve +1a", and it lets you get to the net and end the point. You don't see the serve and volley as much as you used to because it's been replaced by "Serve +1a", and it's something YOU can use to play aggressively even if you don't have the greatest volleys in the world.

Essential Tennis taught me a similar play but instead of hitting a forehand, you actually move right to hit a backhand. This is because the swing path of a backhand is easier to re-direct up the line than taking a cross court shot up the line with a forehand. The forehand ball must cross in front of your body while for a backhand it doesn't. For the backhand, the ball is moving to you while for the forehand you're actually hitting it as its moving away from you. The swing path of the backhand is from left to right, which is what you want the ball to do. The swing path of the forehand is right to left, that's the natural direction of the shot, which means you'll have to overcome that to hit it. You run around the forehand and hit the backhand shot only when you're able to do so, you don't force it. I've practiced it and used it and its a very natural feeling shot. :)

Thanks Will! This is a great play, expecially when I play against greater returner with a good forehand cross court. If I try to play serve&volley I hit a difficult volley, down my knees. I will try this play!

Great play, I’ll be using this as my core tactic to shorten points and win matches, thanks! 👍🏻

Great Tactic Will!! During matches I played I have used a variation of this. Instead of aiming the serve wide, I try to hit T serves because they cut the angle of my opponents return, this usually lead to a return of serve at the middle of the court which makes it easier for me to find my forehand.
