Federer’s SABR is one of the most impressive shots in tennis. Here is how to do it. #tennis #federer

I’ve used it for a while. My return of serve is one of the strongest parts of my game and coming in on second serves seemed quite natural.

I miss Federer. He turned tennis into an art

There were a lot of players in the 80's and early 90's that were not only serve and volley players, but they tried to come in behind just about every second serve. That tactic is gone, but as a surprise shot and if someone has a weaker second serve, it can be very effective.

I am playing it from past few months. It is effective shot most of the time

It's just incredible that even shots that takes expert mastery even for tennis players and coaches alike Roger was the only one who would be the closest to pull it off constantly

Basically, be sure you have SKILLS before you attempt the SABR shot! 👍

Your footwork and timing has to be spot on...

It’s crazier that Roger was doing it against blistering deep serves too, but he’s so good with his hands on the fly

I wouldn’t do it on clay because of bouncing inconsistencies. Has Federer ever used the SABR on clay? Would be interesting to find out.

I practice this with my ball machine simulating a second serve deep in the box but slower speed. I then use it often in games standing halfway between the service and baseline with my friends who have weak second serves. Works great. Easy to get to the net. I stay back just enough to deal with anything except the deepest lobs. Love it.

I'm not normally a great fan of Patrick as a coach. But I *_really_* like this advice for amateurs. When I was a young man I used to use"block and charge" off second serves to great effect. Now this is not quite the same, as it is a half-volley drive but has many features in common.

Can you explain how to split step properly and improve footwork for junior players.

I don't always walk up for half volley, but I do take serves right after the bounce. Im usually positioned on the service line to receive. In the case of someone with a slow service, I move backwards, because the ball is more difficult to time right after the bounce.

I actually was doing it when I was much younger and still playing 20 years ago but started earlier than that…as I was also playing “foot” at a certain level it has helped me to read my opponent on many cases making it easier to do it among other little tricks…such as shots where I was using my wrist like in our g-pong for small non power shots…😉
Love your shorts way to go…franchement super les explications !

Yesterday we discussed this shot in my classes and although I always love Roger tennis I never saw this as a shot. I am gonna try this out in my classes and let you know the result. I love sneaky style and tricking shots.

You need to have insane quick reflexes with great volley touch… only Federer could do it and even for him it wasn’t that effective, but it was worth playing cuz it would make his opponents rethink

I've tried it a few times but I need to improve my half volleys for sure. But I also come in on my 2nd serve sometimes. Especially in a big spot. My position is I don't want to give my opponent a clean look at a 2nd serve. Especially if I'm behind in the game.

So I'll use it at 0-40 15-40 or even 30-40 if I want to make sure I stay aggressive.

Thanks Patrick, I use it often and have done so for many years. But now that you posted this amongst your global fan base, I might need another surprise tactic 😂🎾

McEnroe used to play it as a chip and charge
