We all know William won the Battle of Hastings, but this is really only the beginning of the story.

Thank you this is a really good presentation, if I might draw parallel to my ancestors in Serbia, they probably came to the region of Globočica or Dubočica as it was known later, after the region was given by the Byzantine emperor to the Grand Prince Stefan Nemanja, my presumed ancestor Radonja made a farm which eventually grew into a village, his farm or village is mentioned for the first time in the document, in which Princess Milica gifts his farm/village to the monastery Hilandar on mount Athos in late 14. century, the significance is that the people in the village payed taxes to the church and were not drafted into the army. After Turkish conquest several times the region was burned down and decimated, after the great Austro-Turkish war, plague and mass migration caused by fear and Turkish vengeance every 23. person remained in the region. What is known from the nineteen century records before the region was liberated after more than 400 years of Turkish occupation, is that the life of peasants and craftsman, depended largely on WHO was the ruling lord in the city, there were some Lords/Pashas who were very kind and friendly with Serbs and treated them very well and were remembered with fondness, while other times when the person in charge was cruel he could make live of Christians hell, it was noted in 19. century that the feudal owner/s of the village Radonjica was/were particularly malicious. One of my ancestors killed him with an axe and then fled to another village for a while and was given shelter by possibly another feudal owner with whom he was friendly. While on my grandmothers side in another village in the region, their family were crafts man they were basket makers, one woman who didn't have descendants, was were close with the feudal owner they were good friends at least and possibly lovers, so she was gifted a huge piece of land in the village, he basically told her take as much as you want, so it is still owned by the family. Both instances are probably near the year 1878 when the region was permanently liberated, and the gifting of land might be partially or entirely be motivated by it. It was probably the same everywhere in the world, if the lord was cruel the peasants suffered, if he was kind they had good life, and don't forget that all of them are humans and they had inter human relations and that is the determining factor. I doubt in the end of the day it mattered much to the peasants if the feudal lord was Norman or Saxon, they still needed to do their work and pay taxes, religion was the same so they didn't have that as a barrier and language is learned by both sides at least a part that is needed.
