Byzantine medicine: A Medieval surgery of conjoined twins
According to the chronicle of Ioannes Skylitzes, during the era of the emperor Romanos Lekapinos (920-944) an unusual event took place in Constantinople. A pair of conjoined twins appeared in the Byzantine capital. The twins sparked the curiosity of the people who viewed the two brothers as a wondrous spectacle.Everybody in the city went to see the two brothers. The twins probably became some sort of spectacle. Later they were expelled from the city because they considered to be a bad omen. The two brothers returned to Constantinople , this time during the era of Constantine VII Porphyrogenitus (945--959). Meanwhile one of the two brothers died. In order to save the other twin, experienced doctors were summoned to try and save the living brother. The doctors decided to make a surgical operation in order to excise the dead portion. The surgical operation was successful. The doctors managed to seperate the two twins. Even so the living twin died too , three days later. It was none the less the first ever and successful operation of this sort in world history. And even today such surgeries are difficult operations and of high risk.
The case of the surgery of the conjoined twins reveals the high standard of byzantine medicine of that time.
