My father - Brian M. Barrow - was aboard HMS Suffolk during this action. He was a very young midshipman, barely 18 years old. He loved the sea and we would go sailing whenever we could when I was a kid in the late 70’s and early 80’s (yes, he was in his 50’s when I was born, mum was half his age lol) but he spoke little of his time at sea during the war. Thankfully for me (he died not long past my 20th birthday) he did write it all down and it’s a fascinating read.

We forget the sacrifices made for us today by him and all of those who have their life for the allied cause against the Nazis. So much so that national socialism and fascism rise once more. We cannot allow it. For us and for all the men and women who fought and died for us to not have to live under tyranny.

My mother knew a man who missed his train and thus the last voyage of HMS Hood. Deep respect to all those on both sides who lost their lives in this pursuit.

“Sink the Bismarck” is a great song about this battle by Johnny Horton. Released in 1960 it reached #3 on the charts and #1 in Canada. If you’re a fan of this story or a fan of country music it’s worth a listen.

My father was CPO Gunnery on HMS Rodney. He may well have been one of only a few aboard to see the battle as all other crew were closed down carrying out their duties at battle stations.
He joined the RN in about 1931/32, survived the war, and died in 2001. None of Rodney’s crew would be alive today I think.
One of his brothers was injured in a tank battle in the Western Desert, and survived to the age of 60.

The supporting photos and artwork are outstanding with examples of each ship as mentioned. The art of the Swordfish pulling up from the Bismark showing the fatal hit is awesome.

HMS Hood did not hit Bismarck because she mistook Prinz Eugen for the German flagship. Shortly into the action she shifted her fire to Bismarck. Her shells were correct for range but well off line. She was destroyed before she could straddle or hit Bismarck. All three hits on Bismarck came from HMS Prince of Wales. (Source: the book Pursuit, by Ludovic Kennedy, who was stationed on one of the British ships on the morning of Bismarck’s sinking.)

For all the resources poured into Bismarck and Tirpitz, the amount of actual damage they did is seemingly minor. Much like the Yamato and Musashi none came close to doing what they were designed fot.

Wow, this is the most in depth explanation I have ever heard about the battle to sink the Bismarck. Outstanding job!

A really excellent retelling of a very well known story, but with a slant towards the German side of the account, and this has provided a lot of fresh information (to me, at least). Those last few days sound truly grim aboard Bismarck .

I've seen a fair few docs about the bismark and nearly didn't watch this but this had some excellent details I didn't know. Plus I always wondered about the sleep deprivation which this touches on well. Can't wait for the 2nd part

On the evening of 26 May German submarine U-556 sighted the carrier HMS Ark Royal and battlecruiser HMS Renown. U-556 was on its way back to base from her patrol and had already spent all her torpedoes but she did observe activity on Ark Royals flight deck. U-556 saw Ark Royal launch the swordfish aircraft that doomed Bismarck but was unable to do anything to stop it.

Possibly my favorite tale of WW II. Heroism of the British Pilots...amazing. Air power now the lexicon.

Those early hits by Prince of Wales in the Battle of the Denmark Strait were in effect mission kill.

It was HMS Prince of Wales that hit the Bismarck. One armour piercing round hit her bow and put a hole in it without exploding. Another pierced her side armour and caused an oil leak. She was down in the bow by ten degrees.

What we see at 15:26 is the explosion of the Hood and at about 15:31 the flash and the explosion is the forward 14-inch tower of the POW firing on the Bismarck while trying to avoid the wreck pieces of the Hood by violently swerving to the right as it was following right behind her.

A good account. Lutjens it has to be said was no loyal follower of the NSDAP. The search by the two Lough Erne based catalinas is understated, also the catapult compressed air system was US owing to damage from a shell from Prince of Wales. This had destroyed some launches splinters from which had damaged the compressed air piping.

This video is one of the best I've seen on these historic events. Lest we forget.
