SINK THE BISMARCK: Short Summary - The World War II story of the British Navy's effort to defeat Nazi Germany's most powerful warship.

SINK THE BISMARCK: Full Synopsis - In 1941 Captain Jonathan Shepard takes over as Director of Operations at naval headquarters in London just as they receive reports that the Bismarck, the pride of the German navy, is going out to sea in the North Atlantic. Shepard argues in favor of moving as many ships as possible to the area to find her. In their first encounter with the Bismarck, the Royal Navy loses HMS Hood, the largest ship in the fleet while HMS Prince of Wales is severely damaged. Shepard then transfers ships from the Mediterranean fleet to go after Bismarck; they include the aircraft carrier Ark Royal on which his son Tom is serving as an aircraft gunner. Damaged in a second encounter, the Bismarck heads for Brest on the French coast and the safety of German coastal defenses and air cover. The only ship in range is the Ark Royal but in their first air sortie, they inadvertently attack HMS Sheffield when they mistake it for the Bismarck. In the second air sortie, they damage the Bismarck sufficiently to allow the surface fleet to catch up to her and sink her.

I was having a discussion with our 2 sons the other day telling them about the HMS Hood and the Bismarck and how the Royal Navy ran her down and sank "the un-sinkable Bismarck and remembered this movie.
After searching all over on television and Streaming TV I wasn't able to find it so I came on the web it popped up instantly so we watched it thru the phone on our Big Screen TV and the boys, the wife and I made popcorn and had a movie night. It was a fantastic home movie night ! Thanks So much for putting out such high quality work.

Indeed like many of the comments herein; this film easily remains in the running for 1st place when it comes to historical war movies. I still have on my living room wall, a very old picture of the Special Service Squadron World Tour 1923-24. Comprising 7 ships with HMS Hood as flagship, they visited 36 ports of the world. By May 1941, the Hood had become a beloved symbol of the British Empire's Royal Navy. As Winston Churchill wrote in the Grand Alliance, the loss of Hood was a bitter grief. In order to avenge her, “Sink the Bismarck” was all he had to say.

What is truly great and admirable about this film is its dedication to factual reporting and the director's ability to keep variances for cinematic effect at a minimum. Also, it is commendable that he was able to show the dual feelings of elation at and sadness for the sinking of a great ship that all sailors, even of the enemy, feel when they see or hear of that dreadnought going down. The human dedication to Bismark's destruction was not overstated as it was vital to Britain's ability to keep their supply lines open to stave off defeat as long as possible. And, the special effects and adherence to the details of battle conditions were very well done. Altogether, a superb film and well acted by all the players, Kenneth More and Dana Wynter especially.

Saw this movie on the big screen when it was new. We kids all liked it a lot. Also saw "The Great Escape" and "The Guns of Navarone" first run. All a bit dated now but were great stuff at the time. WW2 is fast fading into the past. Most of the veterans are gone. My father was on a submarine in the Pacific (USS Sealion SS315) from 1943 till the end of the war in 1945. He was just a kid officer LTJG, 21 years old, straight out of ROTC at the University of Washington in Seattle. But, like many, he never spoke about the war. Enjoy this fine British naval movie.

Out of all the stuff I've seen on here, I never expected a full version of Sink The Bismarck. This is very nice.

Thank you for this wonderful film, proving that even in the 1960's a very sophisticated movie with wonderful special effects and expert editing did not require computers or anything - and all those superb British actors. England - Land of Hope and Glory!!

Such a well done movie ! Stuck to the facts. Really enjoyed it. And yet, I am always reminded what my Retired Navy Senior Chief ex used to tell great the ship was sunk but their are sailors fighting for their lives & dying. I love WWI & Civil War movies. Had not seen this one in years. Thank you for posting it !

At 1:24:
The penultimate scene. Kenneth Moore learns that his son is alive and well. Overcome by relief, he steps into his bedroom and begins to cry with relief. Dana Wynter comes in and, seeing that Moore is emotionally broken, moves to help him but then stops, realizing that he would not want her or anyone else see him like that.
Her act of strength and compassion in that moment was emblematic of what a truly strong woman she was.
Won't easily find that type of woman today.

Based on the true story of the hunt for the Nazi super-battleship Bismark, this film follows the valiant attempts of the British Admiralty's chief of operations, Captain Jonathan Shepard (Kenneth More), and his team as they gather intelligence and launch an offensive against the dreaded German juggernaut. Midway through the operation, Shepard is shocked to discover his old rival, Admiral Günther Lütjens (Karel Stepanek), is at the helm of the Bismarck, and the mission suddenly becomes personal.

This is a great movie, I watched the documentary under the same name, but being able to see the strategy and mechanics of a sea assault implemented is fascinating.
