Watch to see exactly how much doctors earn, but more specifically how much General Practitioners or GPs earn. GP pay is much more variable than hospital doctor pay and the sky really is your limit.

Key points to take away from the video:
Model contracts and advice from the BMA
Important to negotiate salary/fee if locum
Important to understand contract, rights and entitlements.

Timestamps
0:47 How much do doctors earn? Salaried GPs
Model contract for doctors earnings: annual salary set out as a minimum by the Doctors Dentists Review Body (DDRB). However, this is seen as an outdated salary. For a full-time salaried GP working 37.5 hours per week in England in 2019-20 it is: £58,808 to £88,744 (plus London weighting - extra money for those working in London due to expensive nature.) NB. there is no upper limit- so employers are able to award a higher salary.
Usually the pay is per session and ranges from £9-10,500 (multiple this figure by the number of sessions to get annual salary) and can and should be negotiated. Part time: pro rata
Recommendations from BMA: employers should pay an additional percentage increase on top of the DDRB annual uplift to avoid age discrimination.
Employers are also required to provide their salaried GPs with an annual incremental pay increase. This could be a percentage increase or a set amount which affects how much doctors or GPs earn. This is determined by the employer and employee (GP).
Doctors may also receive bonus payments for example meeting QOF (Quality and Outcome) targets.

3:11 How much do doctors earn? Locum doctors earn:
Locum GPs can work as sole traders, by joining a locum agencies or group arrangements (e.g. chambers). Locum GPs are usually self-employed and paid a fee.
For example if self employed, an invoice is sent to the practice versus agency work where they help you find work; you submit a time sheet and the agency pay you based on how much the job is advertised for. The practice will pay them (including a commission). Could be self employed or employed through the agency so read the Terms and Conditions (T&Cs).
Many GPs work as a locum OR salaried doctor and locum doctor. Your insurance can cover you for both salaried and locum work which should work out to be cheaper than locuming alone.
You can work for a GP surgery, private practice or out of hours work.
Fees are negotiable between the practice and the locum doctor. How much a doctor earn will depend on the fee, usually per hour for what they will do in return. For example workload e.g. appointments and admin.
A locum doctor earns between (roughly) - £75-100 +/- NHS pension.

5:36 How much do doctors earn? GP partners
Average full time: £100,000 (after expenses) ; range 100,000 (SW England) to 120,000 (E of England). Note that GPs earning more than 150k/year (NHS + non NHS income) will have to declare from Feb 21.
6:12 Factors for how much doctors earn: profits, being a new partner, pension.
8:33 Other things that will affect how much GPs earn or how much doctors earn: the building, how proactive the partners are, if the earnings are sustainable, the local area.

9:22 To ensure you are earning well as a doctor you want to be a part of a partnership that has these key features.

Thank you for sharing this, very helpful. I feel training doesn't really give you much about the realities of the job, and we are not really empowered to know about finances as a doctor!

I earn just shy of £400, 000 per annum (£150, 000 from property investments and £250, 000 from my job). Unfortunately I’m not academically gifted as I have mild Aspergers and dyslexia. I don’t particularly enjoy my job any more, just wish that I the skill set to work in the medical profession.

Good video! Keep it up! Do you have a video on how to build up your GP portfolio as a medical student or as a GP trainee?

Thank you very much for this video! Had a personal question (so completely understand if you decide to not answer) but how did you manage your family/dating life as a GP or even in your foundation years? (I understand that as a GP there is more free time compared to other branches in Medicine but was it still a bit difficult?)

Hi! I am a High School Student in Sydney Australia, I am unsure about my career path but was told by many friends and family members that I should pursue a medical path and become a GP or other medical roles. I would like to ask how hard was it to become a GP, if you would recommend it for teenagers nowdays and if you think being a GP is worth it. Thanks so much!

How much experience would be required to be a GP on a rate of £10, 000/session?

Also, if a GP is on that rate, can they work 13 sessions a week for the whole year and be paid £130, 000?

This is a bit off topic from the video (which I thought was really insightful btw !) but could you talk about like the rota of the junior doctor and what it was like? I know it varies depending on ur rotation but it would be cool if you showed us previous rota from when you were a junior (if you are able/willing to do that and it isn’t too personal or confidential) and maybe reflected on it etc. Just wandering as a curious medical student! Also I know the average working hours is supposed to be capped at 48 hours is that actually the case? Where you always working up to 48 average or sometimes more or less etc. I’ve also heard that you can end up having to stay a while longer than the end of your shift. Is this common and is this something you experienced? I know I’ve asked a lot of questions and if any are too personal or you would prefer not to answer I completely understand :)

Hi, just trying to understand more about GP partner pay. Do they make a salary from the GP practice, and then added to this is a cut of the profits?
Also, if a GP partner leaves a practice, would they get back the money that they initially invested to become a GP partner?

By the way, your videos are really helpful. Thank you so much for taking the time to make them and share your knowledge.
