It's no mystery. Our laws have made it almost impossible to afford basic needs for yourself, let alone dependents.

Its definitely not childhood - its because its too expensive for us to survive OURSELVES, let alone bringing in a new expensive mouth to feed

good! let's aim for a negative rate. We have 2X the popultion we need. But the invaders have high birthrate, so our real population will continue to explode.

I am 24 yr old gen z woman, my upbringing was traditional, conservative and very much loving.
I am childless by choice. My reasoning behind this decision is the economy, climate change, and the current state of the world government.
I tell my family who constantly asks for potential spouses and the possibly of adding an additional member to the family, that I might change my mind, I might not, and I’m okay with any consequences I have due to this decision.

Umm I always assumed birth rate was down due to Like younger people are still living at home. Can't get a decent job. Kinda hard to have kids when you are still living at home and broke LOL.

Most entry level jobs require a phd for some reason a randomly 5 yrs experience. AND they pay min wage. No affordable housing, no living wage, no universal healthcare. Ppl can't afford to GIVE BIRTH LOL! Can't move out, broke, unemployed/underemployed.

Also many people NEVER want kids. PERIOD. But these days there is less pressure to forcibly have kids. So many people who are single or with someone DON'T HAVE THEM.

I think it has VERY LITTLE TO DO with how they were raised. WAY TO VICTIM BLAME! Many people who had bad childhoods have kids CUZ THEY WANT THEM. And they raise them the way they WISH THEY WERE RAISED!

Is this why the child tax credit went up? Are they trying to incentivize people to have more babies?

It's cruel to have children in this economy. I can buy a beach house in other countries for less than $60, 000 with better quality that you can find here in the states in some locations and the water there is much cleaner. As an American I should be able to do the same in my own GD country.

I don't buy what the so called expert is saying. I think the media misses the mark on this topic.

There is a simple answer to this: Feminism and shareholder capitalism. Men and women are no longer partners, the rich are getting richer at the same rate the middle class is getting poorer and for many working couples two incomes is barely enough to keep a family going. Besides, you see more and more problems talking about their solution without really wanting to commit.
