U.S. population growth hits record low

New data from the U.S. Census Bureau shows the U.S. population grew by just 0.1% in the past year, the slowest rate since the nation was founded. Tara Bahrampour, a reporter for The Washington Post, joins CBSN to discuss what attributed to the low growth rate.

Is this a surprise? People can't afford the down payment on a house and are forced to work 3 jobs to be able to pay skyrocketing rent, that is higher than an house payment, and you expect them to raise a family also?

Who in their right mind wants to, and can afford to have kids? It takes two SOLID incomes to provide food and shelter in just about every community, and job security has been demolished by corporate greed and a global disaster. Very few people feel secure anymore, with no way of knowing what the long-term side-effects of this pandemic will be upon their careers or health. I would hope to spare the next generation a lifetime of deprivation by waiting until this disease is defeated, before conception can be considered. Our society is rocking into chaos, so it makes sense to postpone childbearing until things calm down and hopefully build back better.

In the Era of Automation, population decline is probably a very good thing. Governments should shift the tax burden to automation and stop taxing employment.

Probably has to do with the marriage rate also declining. Not many people want kids when there not in a stable relationship to bring up those kids.
