Panasonic Lumix GH7 Is Great, But Micro Four Thirds Still Need a PROPER Lumix GX Camera

This is not a review of the new Panasonic Lumix GH7 Micro Four Thirds camera, but rather just a little reaction of what I think about the GH7, as well as my hope for the future Lumix camera. We definitely need a proper GX series camera, with new sensor and PDAF, IBIS, fully articulating with new tilt mechanism screen, microphone jack, adequate manual control, adequate video capabilities, and most definitely a reasonable price! Hopefully we'll get that camera soon. Meanwhile, I think the GH7 is a fantastic camera for its target market, and hopefully it will sell well and will continue to push Micro Four Thirds developments in the future.

I think a GX with phase detect autofocus, decent IBIS, 4k60 and weather sealing (both on the camera and in updated versions of compact lenses) using the new sensors would do pretty well. If the viewfinder, screen and controls were top-end, it would do very well. Here's hoping!

Exactly. We need a compact camera that is designed for still photos. Not everyone want to make high quality movies. I would just use my phone for video.

I wanted to buy a used GX9. Prices are quite high. There is definitely a demand for a compact Lumix GX camera.

Any M43 camera release is great news for our community. And it seems that the GH7 is going to be the camera that will silence the doomsayers about the M43 format for the moment. I don't think Panasonic will release a new GX camera anytime soon, as we already had the G9ii last autumn and now we have the GH7. I get the feeling that Panasonic were hoping that the S9 might replace the GX series (a clue in the number of the camera S"9"!), but, as we know, that camera was a bust (and hence the quick follow-up release of the GH7 to save face). Maybe next year we'll see a GX9ii/GX10, which is what the S9 should have been in the first place.

Gary, you hit the right spot! You should be Lumix's product manager! Coming from GX85, GX9, I'm super dissappointed on Panasonic's current m4/3 line-up and where it's headed. And I hope Panasonic wakes up soon!

I agree completely Gary! We're all waiting for a GX10/GX9 Mk II.

I agree with you man. Panasonic needs to put the "Micro" back in M4/3. A GX8/GX9 styled compact weather sealed body with the new 25mp PD sensor is needed. I still can't believe Fuji is just going unchallenged in this segment. If we get this, I would definitely buy one.

Yesss!! I own a gx85. But what me and many other been demanding for a long time is a GX10 with PDAF. 25 MP sensor. Definitely fully weather sealed becoz its going to be my everyday carry cam, good res viewfinder( no need for the tilty one), Real time LUT and lumix lab support for fun colour experimentation. In cam raw editor with more editing options, A BAZEL-LESS DISPLAY!! Smartphones have reached lightyears ahead with good quality display with tiny side bazels and even no bazels at all, but we still got displays with bazels taking up so much of real estate.why no one is taking about it. If smartphones can do it, definitely cameras can do it. Live digital ND like olympus cameras. Computational photography is the future. Live viewable compositing for long exposure. Advanced In cam double exposure. Good in cam HDR photo. No need for high end video specs. Just 4k60 will do enough. If they can do a 4k 120 even for just a full minute, it will be enough for covering action. I don't think anyone takes 4k120 shots more than that duration other than movies. A mic input offcourse. Built in flash. But still compact as possible. But please don't omitt an evf and mic jack for a few mm of size. A good grip with thump placement is necessary.

Asking all this is too much to come under 1000 dollars maybe. But possible by lumix.if not, make a cheap varient omiting some functions like what gx85 was to gx8.

Totally agree as I take my gx80 everywhere with me instead of my full frame which I have not used now for over a year, we need a gx90

Yes, GX10 please! Or a new GM perhaps? M43 has the small lenses, why doesn't Pany take advantage?

A new GX with all the features mentioned would be an instant buy for me.

I was pretty set on getting a G9, and then by coincidence I went on a trip with a group of friends and one of them had one. After trying it, it reminded me of why I got into Micro Four Thirds in the first place. The G9 is a great camera, but it felt too big. Sticking with my GX8 for now, which felt really compact in comparison, and even the GX8 is large when compared to my old GX1.

I'm right there with you, Gary. I'm waiting for something with an improved feature set compelling enough for me to move up from our GX85, and in that price range.

Absolutely right! I don’t need a bulky MFT-Cam that weights 700 gr. or more. And so I sold my GX8 and all my lenses.

a small gx with a new sensor, better stab and weather sealing is all what i need

I still love the last generations but I would buy new cameras of the GX line for sure. I only wish, they will add all the important features to them and make different models like the GX8 and GX9. The new big models are also impressive. I will get the G9II when it gets cheaper. I can wait another year and I think it will better, than releasing a model, that lacks all important features.

I desperately want a GX10 camera. But with a tilting screen rather than a flip out screen. I've never wanted a camera so much, and it doesn't even exist, haha. Please please please Panasonic!
I nearly always take my GX80 out with me instead of my Sony A6100 as I prefer the compact setup with the compact lenses, the user experience of the menus, tactility of the buttons, feel of it in my hand and it's looks. And I particularly love the shutter sound!

Maybe I should find a GX9 as an interim.

Been saying it for months, will keep saying it until we see it (or something like it) GX9II - with GX9II sensor phase detect, swap the ports to the left (and change it to two USBC with at least one being Thunderbolt) allowing to power of a battery bank and support a external monitor/recorder/recording to SSD, flippy screen (yes I know that will make it a bit more thicc) bluetooth mic and headphones and give it better video capacities - maybe something like the S9 or just short of it - even if it's just 10 to 15 min of 4k 120fps ~30 at 24fps or open gate, and 32bit float audio for run and gun social media video
I have full frame, APS and MFT and the real selling point of MFT is its lenses - both the insane range and the compactness relative to other formats - fore example no APS or full 35mm sensor format can do a ~24-70 or 70-200 2.8 that even comes close to the compactness and light weight of Panasonics (wanna see my R8 with the RF 70-200, the R8 may only weigh 11 grams more than my GX9 (461g vs 450g with batteries) but stick the 70-200 2.8 and the 35-100 2.8 and its 1.531Kg v's 810g or almost twice the weight with Canon's lightest full frame body and to be fairer even if we go with the 70-200 F/4 (a lens I own) it's still 1.156kg v's 810g and it's still much bulkier than my GX9+35-100 2.8

They should update the Lumix DC-G110 with in body image stabilization and the new sensor as well as autofocus for under 1000 $ would be a perfect camera.

We don’t need 4k 60p😅 I just need good full HD and great autofocus
