the thing is you can melt metal surprisingly fast with only a lens that is about the same size as maybe 2-4 of those hand held mirrors. the problem is not the mirrors it needs to be focused. if the mirrors were slightly concave to create a focused beam it would work better.

If anyone has played Fallout: New Vegas, there’s a weapon in the game called Euclid’s C-Finder. It’s a targeting gun that focuses a solar energy array to a satellite that you can signal towards wherever you want (virtually a giant laser). I Wonder if Obama ever had a similar plan in the works and contracted the myth busters to build it.

What if they used some sort of focus contraption using large glass lenses? It could narrow the beam down to a smaller condensed focal point increasing it's energy.

If the mirrors raise the temperature at all, which it seems like they did, then the weapon IS possible. It's just a matter of how much will it take? Did Archimedes have lenses or curved mirrors? Could he have gathered sunlight from a much larger area and have it focused through lenses and secondary mirrors? Is there a more modern solution to the solar cannon?
