5 STEPS for your first 'tameshigiri (mat cutting)!' How to get a clean cut with a katana #Shorts

*The content is based on personal studies and experience
There is no intention of denying other theories and cultural aspects

1. Hold the katana with your right hand on top, and keep about two fingers
worth of distance between your left hand (that is on bottom).

2. Bring your right foot forward, bend your knees, and stretch out your arm and wrists in front of you (the tip of the katana at about your chest height)

3. Raise your hands as high as possible above the top of your head.

4. Shift your katana to the right by bringing your left hand above your right ear, and slightly turn the sharp edge outwards

5. Swing your katana down to your left waist, as you draw a straight line
from above your head. When you swing, imagine you are throwing a fishing line, or an apple that’s stuck to the tip of your sword as far as possible. Relax your shoulders and arms, and from a high position
draw a big circle with the tip of your katana.

Then let’s try cutting!

However, each ryuha style will have different methods, so what I explained is not an absolute answer.

Your gaze, menacing aura, and your intimidating posture makes you a true modern-day samurai. You have my respect

(Also, before using tatami mats, buy a bunch of Fnoodle pool toys at the end of a summer season. :)

Since you posted this, i have a suggestion: how about making a few episodes showing how you would practice tameshigiri using battojutsu. I think it would be interesting to watch :)

The ‘straight motion’ was actually quite straight. Impressive.

There's something about the first few demonstration slashes that exude a peaceful aura for some reason.

Fishing line analogy. Brilliant. Its like understanding physics and surfing on it with a large knife.

Swinging like you're casting a fishing line is the best advice I've ever heard. When we practice with a sword and we try to explain it to newbies, I always have such a hard time describing it. I don't know why I never thought of this. Shogo you are a miracle.
