Gotta be honest
Placing tails is a pain in the ass, this seems like a useful way to do it

I don't know why but I've never thought about how the tails are placed even though they're everywhere. It's interesting to know, though!

“prototyping” the placement and direction of the tail is something ive never seen before, and seeing you put it into practice makes it look like it’s been part of your workflow for a very long time! I usually just use a grouped bubble and a thick line with a taper, then add an outline as fx around the group. With the line you can easily do funny stuff like make it way too long and squigily to show someone’s sarcastic or something. Great videos with actual meat and lessons on, keep it coming ❤

I'm not a professional artist, I rarely draw comics for the soul, but I've always done that “tip” too. This is VERY useful in the process.😮

Clipstudio paint… would eliminate a lots of those steps if i am not mistaken…

I like seeing the bits of how a comic is made because every detail even with shortcuts, seems like a painstaking slog.

Aside from that, seeing the cursor made me think you were drawing with a mouse and I couldn't decide if you were a god or I was dumb.

I'm choosing to believe you're a god.

Illustrator user here. Use Pencil tool instead. Set default to white fill. Do not click ON Join shape action automatically. Draw downside part of tail towards character. Then back upside towards word balloon. Reshape using Smooth tool instead of finicky manipulating bezier points.

When tail shape is as desired, close shape. Click on white fill, black stroke on palette, and Pathfinder merge with word balloon.

Been using Illustrator for Comics Production since 1999. Went to SCAD for Graphic Design and Sequential Art, 1995 to 2002. I am only pro artist I know, who uses Illustrator to do Colors rather than Photoshop or Clip Studio, also.

Great videos, been subscribed since last year.

Quite clever. When I'm doing lettering I just choose the length and direction of the tail on the stop. I don't really use any fancy vector-based program to do my lettering, instead I just use the same program I'm drawing on for the lettering, which the program isn't the best for, specially when taking bold and italics into consideration. May I also ask how to you do a template for lettering? I really need one because I don't want to have to draw who knows how many circles and then erase them every time I want to do a thought balloon.

CSP has a brush for this. It converts a vector line into an outlined speech bubble tail

BOI i never thought about separating my bubbles from my tails HAHAH! this makes so much sense!! And it explains how most bubble tails looks like that! Mine are either chuncky or squiggly!

I've done this! I always move around my bubbles and tails til it feels just right before finalizing them

I always end up doing the preliminary tail if I ever make comic speech bubbles

I am learning to draw so I can make comics, I already have a story. Do you by chance have a tutorial somewhere on how to draw faces for comics? Preferably from the side

I outline all my speech bubbles by hand. I feel like it has more personality

When i made some redraws for manga scanlations i always used vectors to make those arrows, maybe -just maybe- i should've done something easier like this

I was like why would you have to do this yourself it's built into clipstudio and then he said illustrator o damn

Whenever I’ve done comics in the past, I always had bubbles laid out with their tails ahead of time so I wouldn’t do too much detail on the parts they would cover up later. Is that not how other people do it? 😅
