2024 Lexus GX on/off-road review: Previewing the LandCruiser Prado

While the Lexus GX has been on sale in the US for a number of years, this will be the first time it's offered in Australia and we're pretty excited about it. Not only will it get a punchy turbocharged V6 petrol engine, it'll go off-road like the best of them. Paul Maric checks it out at the international launch.

I bet it's more expensive than Paul said. Also, fuel economy will be bad, but if you can afford the car, you can afford the fuel.

Paul, think it’s going to be a bit higher than $110k. Emailed my local Lexus dealer after watching your video. $2000 to go on the waitlist and he said: “Estimated Price bracket is around $140, 000 to $180, 000”. The email had some snips of a presentation in it, which also stated 3.5T towing.

Beautiful, Toyota/Lexus pulled it off even with the land cruiser I think it need a redesign. The defender is a good car, but I'd take this over the defender just because of Lexus reliability...

That engine sounds like a winner. Not so much its fuel economy. I wonder what various solutions will be available from the after-market industry to solve the range issue. The new Prado will have similar range issues, now that it will no longer have an OEM auxiliary fuel tank.

Paul, given you were impressed with the Defender, what would you choose - this lexus or defender?

I love this car. Looking at the price and engine specs, I dare say the natural competition will be the 300 series and not the Prado. Maybe for cashed up soccer mums, it is a touch smaller than the 300 and will sell on that in city centres. Fuel economy will push me to the 300 if I had the money.

I really hope the Prado will come with a rear diff locker as standard on all trim levels unlike the previous gen.
