The 2024 Lexus GX 550 Is Now The 'Value' Luxury Off-Roader?

Thanks to the recent addition of the Lexus TX, the brand's new answer to Acura's MDX, the popular Lexus GX gets tasked with a more focused and off-road mission than ever. That's the main reason we don't find any extra 3rd row or cargo room in this generation. Instead Lexus gives us a new 4WD system with more capability, a new engine with more power and torque, a new transmission with nearly double the gears and 2,500 lbs more towing capability. Yep, this GX will tow over 9,000 pounds when properly equipped.

Sadly however, the off road re-birth of the GX also means the loss of some classic Lexus virtues. The cabin is more austere than ever and it's the first Lexus I can think of that sports fake wood rather than real-tree on the interior.

You were a little tougher on your review than others. I appreciate that honesty.

Personally, I’m cross shopping the new GX and new LandCruiser. I’m not in a hurry, though, so I’ll be watching real-world reliability while my stone-simple 18yo GX470 keeps chugging along.

Incredibly detailed review with great interior camera angles. This has got to be the most useful review of the GX550 on YouTube right now. Will be following this channel

i dont know why these manufacturers insist on cramming a 3rd row into these SUVs. i'd much rather have a 2 row SUV with a sliding 2nd row.

Power folding someone in the seat 😂😂 Even Alex had a dark chuckle at that one

As a taller (6' 2") driver, the big problem that I have noticed in newer vehicles is the lack of safe visibility out of the front windshield. They try to put the safety monitoring equipment in a black box at the top middle of the windshield.. see at (20:32) and (27:30).. Unfortunately, now the location of that black box (plus the rearview mirror itself) really hurts the drivers own ability to view out for safe driving. When it comes to safe driving, I trust my own eyes and vision much more than techie safety monitoring devices at the top middle part of the windshield. They need to find another place on the vehicle to put safety monitoring devices so you can look out of the front windshield safely.

Feel the old GX is more luxury both the interior and the subtlety of exterior. This gen is like Toyota, especially the interior. Quality / finish and the premium feeling dose not equal to design. Plus, the design of this gen is also quick and dirty, not as thoughtful, which is unfortunately trend of many new cars now. I think among all of those cars that targeting the luxury segment, CX-90 (of course it has not real predecessor), Genesis and Cayenne see an increase of the quality. Lexus, Bens, and even BMW are all getting cheaper and cheaper. Audi is fine. Land Rover maybe have a wee bit improvement as well. I’m fact, many non-premium cars got a lot of improvements in terms of their finishing.

From what I've seen, as the center screen has gotten bigger, Lexus is offering less in the way of wood and leather interior trim. The interiors don't seem very luxurious, with too much grey plastic.
The interior is more Toyota durable than Lexus rich.

I love the GX 550 and I was thinking about buying it but it's missing a few things:
1. Third row seats don't have enough room... why not use TX as an example?
2. When Third row seats are up, not enough cargo room.... again, look at TX as an example
3. Hate the bump in the center seat
4. Toyota Sequoia has more luxury material than GX, I feel like I'm being cheated
5. KDSS should be on all trims

This is focused on outdoors. It doesn't strike me as a pretender, it's a good compromise between luxury and usability. Easier materials to clean. I'll be looking at this as an alternative to the GC 4xe and Defender, primarily because I want its reliability. And because it's made on one of the best lines in Japan, even the first year of this new model should be reliable.

Does the EKDSS provide any significant impact to the On-Road driving quality/feel?

More specifically, would it make sense to get the Luxury Plus for the cabin and just swap the wheels/tires out for the Overtrail ones to get the same ride quality as the Overtrail?

I’m waiting for that four row or maybe five row or maybe I’ll just go get a bus.

Honestly the base GX sounds like a complete steal for what you get as standard. Has everyone forgotten the twin turbo V6 from Lexus came out in 2018 in the LS? Six years ago, someone needs to tear into one of those engines.

Alex, in addition to no overhead weather protection (loading, camping, tailgating), one of the elephants in the room relative to the previous rear door opening was for 3/4 of the world's markets, including most of the Americas, it opened the wrong way - towards the curb. The other was it made cargo-area access with street parking problematic in tight spaces

Lexus won't transplant the Sequoia's powertrain in the upcoming hybrid GX?

Must say the new GX is much more appealing and cohesive than the LX. Just a shame there's not even a bit of real wood to lighten up the interior.
