KIKUBARI is a Japanese word that describes the act of paying appreciative attention to the people around you without expecting anything in return.
KIKUBARI brings a subtle smile to the hearts of both giver and receiver. I t is a compassionate gesture of giving and sharing the energy of love and kindness.

気 KI - energy of our life force
配り KUBARI- distribute

I encourage us to be in the now, in this moment. Do not let our mind unnecessarily to travel to the past or future, so that we can be more attentive to what is going on right now and share the loving and compassionate energy with people around us, things around us. Then our inner-peace is shared and widespread.....

This is the sevens episode of "5 minutes on Japanese Wisdom" by Azumi Uchitani, once a week, introducing the Japanese life philosophy that brings inner peace.

I find this most commonly sitting around a fire in the evening with family/friends (and pets eg dog). The flames flickering and glowing in the dark and giving out warmth and enjoying this in company and silence.

Thank you for introducing this word.

I strive to give the right amount of attention to all aspects of my life. For internal aspects, there are the words physical, mental, emotional and spiritual. For external aspects, there are other people (social aspect), but as you point out, there are objects and also plants/animals in our lives. I've looked for ways to describe these in the context of caring/giving attention to. The best word I've found for objects is monozukuri (e.g. making the table happy by cleaning) and for plants/animals, kami (e.g. watering our plants). Do these work in Japanese or are there better words in Japanese or any other language?
