What "Shadow" means to you?
In western culture, the word "Shadow" has a negative connotation. We also talk about our personal "shadow" in Jungian psychology.
In Japanese, the Shadow, KAGE (影, 陰) gives a slightly different sensation. KAGE 影 plays a big role in WABI SABI aesthetics. KAGE creates fragile sensual beauty in Japanese art, design, architecture and literature. KAGE 陰 also means the invisible force of energy, in the expression OKAGE SAMADE... find out more in the video!

This is the ninth episode of "5 minutes on Japanese Wisdom" by Azumi Uchitani, once a week, introducing the Japanese life philosophy that brings inner peace. If you like this talk, please subscribe to this channel!

We see it more in western art rather than in modern homes and work places.

That’s a great explanation of the shadow! The notion that the shadow is fragile and yet it’s often seen as villainous and something to get rid of as opposed to integrating with.

Thank you for sharing.. I'm asking the question about shadow in Japanese art. Apart from the painting you showed, is shadow depicted in pictures such as landscapes and portraits?

Apologies, Azumi aren’t we taking about light penetrating through trees or objects but not casting shadow here?
Just to let you know I appreciate your work and extremely fascinated by the Japanese Wisdoms. My son works in Japan and I am learning Japanese. Never know if he marries there and I don’t want to be left behind if my grandchildren are born there with their Japanese mother :)
