One of the best uses for a home server is running your own private multiplayer gaming servers. Friend of mine has a pretty impressive homelab and he runs private servers for several games he and I and a bunch of our mutual friends play as a group, such as Minecraft or 7 Days To Die.

That’s pretty cool
Considering you can do things that you normally can’t or you can just try out new things also love the short

I have had a home lab for as long as I have worked in the IT industry, got a opnsense firewall, layer 3 switch for vlans and static routing and a proxmox hypervisor to spin up vms, mainly Linux and hands down you can learn and research so much

I use mine for hosting missions/events I've made for games, it's great for testing.

I remember in the late 90s everyone talking about building a home server with its dedicated room. Your average person doesn't need one nowadays. But it was a fun subject too talk about at the time.

Debreed set up with a open NAS running a raid 5 on Toshiba 1tbs, 1080 TI running my compression and transcoding. Family in North Carolina can stream sufficiently any torrent or repo from my West Coast mini ATX😊

Finally got enough spare PC parts from upgrading over time to start a server at my house. Installed Linux on it and it's running Plex, discord music bot (doesn't work on most cloud provider, needs residential IP to avoid botting), Minecraft server and I might look into setting up a VLESS VPN for a friend in a country where lots of things are blocked and I happen to have a good internet :p

Also you can store your steam library on a simple server and have it updated overnight at full speed. If you have stupid slow Internet like I do installing a steam library on a new system would take days especially if I had to throttle downloads during the day so I can use the internet. With my steam NAS transferring files it's way faster and still allows me to use all my Internet bandwidth while I'm waiting for it to get done. And my NAS server is just an old workstation with a couple old drives stuck in it, nothing too fancy.
