World's RAREST Muscle Car Ever Built - 1 of 1 Production - 1968 Camaro - Only Video Footage To Exist

The 1968 Camaro Z28 Convertible was a 1 off production car built for GM Executive Pete Estes. This car was pulled from the regular Camaro assembly line and converted to a Z28 to try and impress Pete Estes who controlled the purse strings for Chevy's racing program. The car was supposed to impress Pete to give the race guys the funds for their Trans-Am program. Apparently, it worked because the car survived and had been restored. Since the timing of this footage, the car has gone back underground. This might be the only actual footage of the car.

in 1968 and 69, I was working at a Chevy Dealer near my home, as a "Wash Boy / Car Porter".
This was an after school job, that went full time in the Summer. I had saved all my money from that job,
and in June of 1969, I placed an Order for a 1969 Camaro with 396ci, 375hp, Convertible, SS but also all
of the RS Options like Hide Away Headlights and additional Gauges on the Console, called the Instrument Package.
Color was "Hugger Orange" with Black Stripes, Black Top and Black Interior. The Salesman was laughing at me,
saying things like "Dream On Wash Boy"... until I tossed Five Grand Cash on his desk... He nearly Crapped his Pants!

The car came to a total of $4679.00 which was the most expensive Camaro they had sold there, and only like
$600.00 less than a Corvette. A couple weeks later there was a problem, because they did not want to build
this car as a 4-Speed Convertible... but the Owner of the Dealership stepped in, and told them it was for his
Son, who had just come back from the War... a Couple weeks later the car showed up.
Being the "Wash Boy"... I asked to have the afternoon off, to spend the next 6 hours Detailing the Car and
giving it a Triple Undercoat on the sly... (only paid them for One Coat.)

About a half hour before closing, I was about to drive the car up front, and lock up the bays. All of the other
kids that worked there were Amazed by this car, and all day kept saying things like... "Wonder Who got This Car."
I never told them... until I was driving it our the back door. Just before I did a Screaming Burn Out, I yelled...
This Baby is Mine!! ... Save Your Money! ... That was a Very Good Day... :>)

My uncle used to work at the Norwood plant, he used to talk about some of the Camaro's going down the line, he even made sure the guys took extra care when my 81 Z28 came down the line! Love shows like this!

From the "wish I had it now" desk. Bought a '67 Camaro, 350, 4sp with 4:10 gears in '69 (2nd owner). It also had a rear window defroster (fan) and a fold down seat. Best running car I've ever owned. Loved that car

I owned a 68 Camaro. It was the opposite of rare. It was the most common package. The 327 2-barrel with powerglide, all drum brakes, no power brakes, power steering, no air conditioning. It was a fun car to drive.

Very nice Camaro, Back in 69 up here in Mpls, Minnesota we had a Chevy dealership called Jay Kline Chev, I bought a a 68 RS Big block 396 with them factory headers, On the fenders were Fiber optic for the head lamps, Turn lamps, then on the rear drink tray were the optics for the rear tail lights, I also have speed warning, Also have 8 track with boost, all this was from the factory, Also got that road rally game in the trunk with them factory exhaust manifolds....Love this car it has 62, 000 on the clock oh I also have the 8 track never used yet Music by Chev. Car just sits now still in mint shape. Thanks for your time...

This is a well know car. It's a 1 of 1 that was ordered by Pete Estes, a GM Executive. It's the real deal.

There is a blue 1968 Camaro RS convertible near San Jose CA that had its build sheet showing an optional 302 motor put into it. The car was badged as an RS but original build sheet shows high performance 302.

The story of this car has been around for years, yes it is a factory built car but there were very special circumstances that went along with this car being built so its not like anyone in the general public was going to have a chance to buy it, its more like a special presentation to an executive at chevrolet

This is NOT a production car, it was a specialty built "one off" for Pete Estes (then president of the Chevrolet Division of GM). Rare yes, production no.

Ironic that the paperwork suddenly showed up after Mecum got ahold of it

A rival classmate of mine had a 68 Z 302. It also came with tilt steering and power windows. But afterwards, he added a straight shifter, low profile Micky T' 60's and headers of course. He was also known for overhauling it twice sometimes the 3 times a month after running 1/4 miles at Green River and Little River on the weekends. It did do consistent high 11 low 12's, back in the day (mid 70's). And that was flyin' back then.

Graduated high school in 69 and a junior that year had a dark blue/white striped 68 R/S 302. Understated beauty at its finest!

Back in 83' my cousin owned a 68' Camaro SS 327 Hurst super shift. Red with Black racing stripes. Hard top with white bucket seats. Had 70's on the front and 50's tires on the back end. Squealed those tires in all 4 gears! Had a nice stereo added with a booster and equalizer. Rocked out to Judas Priest with our black leather jackets, drank a 1/2 gallon of Jack Daniels with only a 2-liter bottle of Coke. Hit the Cruise in Flint, Michigan at the South Flint Plaza where everyone gathered. Babe magnet city!!! He even met his future wife there. Great times 🤘

Very interesting and well done video! Brings back memories of a good friend I had for many years out in California who purchased and sold a 1964 Ford Galaxy 500 XL Fastback with a 427 engine. What was unique about this vehicle was that it was ordered with only one Holly four barrel carb rather then the two that was common. Turns out it was one of only twelve that were produced in model year 1964! I saw a Hot Rod magazine with a picture on the front cover of one and stating that if you had one of these in the 1980’s it was worth around 85k! He paid $3500. lol

Wow! What a beautiful car that Z28 is. Originally I thought that the exterior was black, but when I saw it outside, I could see it was actually dark green. A beautiful color combination. Another thing that I thought was a little odd, was the fact that the interior was white. I had always thought that the interior was supposed to be the same color as the top. And the number of options on this car, was just incredible. That Pete Estes was 1 lucky guy. Thanks for the video, I really enjoyed it.
