The magic of the ZL1 engine was weight savings. An aluminum 427 block was quite a thing in 1969. The aluminum engine block introduced several headaches with cooling and tuning, and some drag racers replaced the engine with an iron block 427.

I love these old cars. Can't imagine how fast they would have been back then with good rubber

I remember seeing a 427 COPO Nova up for sale for $5000 Canadian (up in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan) in the local AutoTrader back in the late 1970s. However, back then no one even knew what COPO meant.... Most of us small town locals were all into Hot Rod Magazine which meant Hooker Headers, Edelbrock Cams, chrome Cragar S/S 5 spoke rims, and B&M

Back then, one could also buy a used BOSS 429 Mustang or a 440 Superbird for $5000 as the oil prices had everyone worrying that we were going to run out of crude oil and buying a cheap 4 or 6 cylinder was the only way to

The Z11 '63 Impala was a real "torque" beast. I'm not sure, but I think it ran either a 4:11 or 4:54 rear end.
I owned a '62 Bel Air Sport Coupe (Bubble Top) with a small block 327ci/325hp --- my Fave!!!

I loved these cars back when I was a kid in the late sixties and early seventies, many gear heads back then always working on their cars, hearing guys burning tires, I can still remember in my head, boy I miss them days, if only people would have kept their cars or didn’t wreak them, they would have been worth a lot of money 💰

The 1963 Z 11 Impala was not used for NASCAR racing . The Z 11 had a stroker crank in a 409 for 427 cubic inches . The '63 Impalas used in NASCAR had the Mark 1 version of the big block Mark IV displacing 427 cubic inches . Two totally different engines .

Another neat and rare street drag car was the 1968 Dodge Dart GTS 383 4 spd from the factory - not a lot of people are aware of it :)

All beautiful cars! It's funny how the tires are so skinny compared to today's cars.

My father-in-law bought new off the showroom floor, a 1966 Caprice 427 4-spd with 4:56 rear. He told me he would get in the low 13’s. If he out slicks on it, high 12’s. Not bad for a big luxury car. When I asked why he sold it, he told me it only got 4 mpg. I was told they only made 50, 1 for each of the top 50 dealers in the country.

Remember when in 69 or 70 that a room mate showed up with a new ss 427 malibu. Man, that thing could burn rubber at anytime and for as long as one wanted. I was only 19 so knew little else. Impressive for sure.

Great video but some clarification is needed here.

#2 The COPO was not for the 396 in a 1968 Nova. COPO 9738 was for the TH400 automatic to be made available with the big block engine. Up until that point, the big block was only available with a manual trans. Fred Gibb wanted to drag race the big block Nova with an automatic but NHRA required at least 50 be built by Chevrolet to allow it to be legal in the Stock Eliminator category.

#1 Yenko did not build 38 Novas with the 427. Yenko ordered 37 Novas and 28 of them had the 427 swap. 9 were left as 396’s.

The 69 TA had some rare versions and also the 73-74 SD 455 TAs. The 69 Hurst Olds was rare too. You also had the 421 Tempests and Swiss Cheese Catalinas in the early 60s. Ha, nevermind, just noticed it was Chevy only!

I loved the Chevy Novas with the big blocks. I was too young to buy one but they sure look like fun cars.
Recently at a local "Rods and Relics" show, I saw a stock 1968 Chevy Biscayne with a 409 and 4 speed manual. "Dog dish" hubcaps. The car was a "sleeper" and would have been a real interesting ride.
