That's a decoupling/bypass capacitor used to filter undesired noise from power supplies. A small capacitor with low series inductance can provide fast current for high-frequency transitions.

i just wanna know the connections of the LEDs and the two capacitors that connected to the 555-timers, are they in parallel or series ?? because when i did it, the three LEDs were working at the same time

I can't get this to work. Only the red LED comes on. Any ideas what I might be doing wrong? Cheers.

@MrE12AX7

Yes, that's possible to make.

What could be wrong if the green led lights up then turns off and the red turns on but does not turn off and stay on until you turn the power off. I've checked the reset pins if they were not connected but they were. I only have 2 light by the way 5 red leds in parallel and 5 greens in parallel I've calculated all the needed resistors to get my timing right and so on. But it just does not seem to work properly. Any help?

@kulangot nidiba

To increase time of switching, change C1 and C2 up to 330uF. You may need to do some tests using various capacitors values (220uF up to 470uF) in order to obtain the necessary timing.

@Anshumaan Dey
R1, R2 and R5 values are not important for timings.
Please use C1=C2 and for R4 = use twice the value of the R3

sir one more question, is it possible to increase the output of your circuit?
coz im using LED lumps per lights..and my lumps contained 4 LEDs.

I don't know what the freaking problem is but I can NOT get this circuit right! I breadboarded it twice and it works great but it does NOT work when I solder it together. Extremely frustrating. I suck
