Large tournaments tend to have rules regarding what is considered “in” and “out” for safety reasons. Most times you are not allowed to run off court to play a ball, for safety of other games around you. While the player could have physically gotten a SECOND touch on the ball, the ref most likely stopped play because the player was not allowed to play the ball behind him. Ball is out of bounds on the team closer to the camera. Point goes to the far team.

Cool! Anyways here is a brownie recipe!

Ingredients:
-1 cup of butter

REAL explanation:
At most tournaments/ games there are other games going on nearby. This is a rule that a player can’t go about 4 feet off the court and hit the ball. If the player goes past a certain point before hitting the ball it is considered a dead ball. The ref could tell that the ball was going to pass that certain point so he caught it to avoid having it go onto the other court and disrupt that game or cause injury.
