As someone who has worked in supply chain AND procurement roles, I cannot imagine the logistics behind its construction. What happens if there is a defect in something and we just ordered 18 billion or said components? What if component A got messed up and now doesn’t fit into component Z-12?!

Yup, they had to deal with sabotage, getting it to work, the technology, imperials letting to get it defunded. Then they had to keep a giant weapon secret. In the novel Tarkin it also showed that the imperial bureaucracy was a nightmare. That’s one reason Sidious created the office of grand Moff, to better and faster organize things.

Like how much more expensive an how much more annoyed would the Anti Death Star Imps like Vader an Thrawn been had say that circular firing dish connecting to the rest been inserted only to find they was trying to fit a Circular Super Laser Focusing Dish into a Squared or Triangular Hole... To be honest Vader was right and accounting to the Weakness of the Exhaust Port in the Death Star leading to the Main Reactor completely relying on it and becoming so Unbelievably Arrogant that the Imperials in charge of it thought the Death Star was Absolutely Invincible meant that the Empire was placing too much Eggs in One Basket and after it’s Destruction meant that the Empire was Weakened and the Rebellion was Emboldened by their Victory.

For all the obstacles involved in building it in the first place, it turned out to be a single point of failure for the emperor, because of an exhaust port anyway. A good illustration of putting all your eggs in one basket.
