US, Japan and South Korea Hold Final Joint Drills in East Pacific Ahead of Trump's Term
US, Japanese and South Korean naval forces held a three-day joint exercise in East Asian waters starting on Wednesday. The joint drills called "Freedom Edge" come before President Joe Biden hands over one of his signature national security initiatives to Donald Trump. The drills feature fighter jets and marine patrol aircraft as well as the US nuclear-powered aircraft carrier USS George Washington. The "Freedom Edge" exercise is a response to what the South Korean military said were threats from North Korea, which recently conducted an intercontinental ballistic missile test. South Korean Rear Admiral Hur Sung-jae, who commanded his country’s forces, said, "It has a characteristic of responding to and deterring North Korean provocations."
