"I remember crying during ‘Cold War’ [on the] first take, ” she said. “I didn’t know how that happened but it just did. I was very moved by that. It was really a special moment; then everybody else started to cry.”. She further elaborated, "[The video] deals with a psychosis—you’re in my mind and you get a chance to understand Metropolis, where it all stemmed [from] and my thoughts. It’s very psychedelic and trippy."

— Janelle Monáe on the concept of the video.

"I'm tryna find my peace, I was made to believe there's something wrong with me, and it hurts my heart, Lord have mercy ain't it plain to see that this is a cold war."

Amazing lyric!

Isn't it funny how you appreciate things more with age? I watched this when I was 19 and thought, "So lame! She's just singing! There's nothing going on!" Now, I'm like, wow. just powerful. Everything about this is just amazing.

It's amazing she got teary at that exact line "I was made to believe there's something wrong with me" and when I listen to this song it gets me emotional right there too because it's the truth. I've been conditioned to think my skin, my hair, my beliefs are wrong and so many of us are fighting to correct that, fighting to find self worth in a world that makes us believe we shouldn't have any. I hope you guys know what you're fighting for.

More relevant now than many realize. She already told us.

She made me cry just because. You can feel the pain in the lyrics.

6 years later and people still don't understand WHY SHE'S CRYING! This world is in turmoil and there are so many lost souls who don't wish to see the severity in what we have to deal with. Her song was specifically speaking to her African American brothers & sisters but it SHOULD touch everyone because we are all affected by the chaos of today. We (my melanin blessed family) shouldn't have to fight to be seen as equal. We shouldn't have to wait until others are affected by the poor decisions of our "leaders" for help. We should not have to feel bad about our skin. Our melanin comes with so much more than people seem to realize. I love that today so many people of all races, genders, religions, backgrounds, etc. are waking up & beginning to understand the hate that is being bred within this world. But it needs to be much more. The revolution is necessary.

This is the most raw and authentic video janelle has made. This video shows her true talent and vulnerability in its rare form

She is the one that was foretold long ago, the one that was to the savior of soul.

So you think that I'm alone?
But being alone's the only way to be
When you step outside
You spend life fighting for your sanity

This is a cold war
You better know what you're fighting for
This is a cold war
Do you know what you're fighting for?

If you want to be free
Below the ground's the only place to be
'Cause in this life
You spend time running from depravity

This is a cold war
Do you know what you're fighting for?
This is a cold war
You better know what you're fighting for
This is a cold war
You better know what you're fighting for
This is a cold war
Do you know what you're fighting for?

Bring wings to the weak
And bring grace to the strong
Make all evil stumbles as it flies in the world
All the tribes come and the mighty will crumble
We must brave this night
And have faith in love.

I'm trying to find my peace
I was made to believe there's something wrong with me!
And it hurts my heart
Lord have mercy, ain't it plain to see?

This is a cold war
Do you know what you're fighting for?
This is a cold war
You better know what you're fighting for
This is a cold...
This is a cold war
You better know what you're fighting for

Do you know it's a cold, cold war?
Do you? Do you? Do you?

It's a cold, cold war
You better know what you're fighting for

Bye, bye, bye, bye
Don't you cry, when I say goodbye?

Just came out as a gay guy to my family and I mentioned this song. It was a good moment and I finally feeling free. I was made to believe there's something wrong with me but NO, let's enjoy our souls and who we are. Hope everyone on the LGBTQ community experiment to feel what I feeling now. Happiness and peace.

"I was made to believe there's something wrong with me." Only certain demographics understand why this line is so heavy.

This woman and recording are amazing. Of course, since she doesn't fit the mold of the everyday claptrap pop crap, she's not found great success yet. Regardless, she's one of the most interesting, inventive, empowered voices out there today. God bless.
