Direct sowing tips for watermelons

Watermelon seeds might not sprout if you eat them, but they don't have too much trouble sprouting when placed in good soil!

Most melon and squash seeds do better when sown directly instead of being started in cells and transplanted out. However, you still need to ensure the soil stays moist. You may also need to use something like row cover to protect the seeds and seedlings from animals.

As with any plant, check the back of your seed pack for all of the details on planting depth, spacing, and so on. Even two varieties of melon can have different needs for optimal growth, so it's best to double-check.
