Most of the libertarians I know are closer to your definition of classical liberalism, including myself. However, I do know some anarcho-capitalists that fit your definition of libertarianism.

You kind of forgot to mention the development of New Liberalism, in the late 19th century/ early 20th centuries. Its crucial in understanding why Liberalism changed its stance on government .New Liberals Intellectuals like Hobhouse, Green, John Stewart Mill and Masterman, who used classical liberal logic to advocate for a larger and more interventionist state: claiming that poverty, squalor and ignorance in which many people lived made it impossible for freedom and individuality to flourish and this could only be resolved via collective action. This thinking would influence many prominent politicians in the west including; FDR, Winston Churchill, David Lloyd George, Hebert Asquith, and William Beveridge (would designed Britain's post war welfare state). New Liberal thought also lead to the Keynesian school of economics, which enjoyed hegemonic status amongst western policy makers from 1945 until the rise of Friedman and Hayek.

I'm a libertarian, but I believe in a role for the state to protect rights. I just also believe that the government should be as anemic as possible while exercising that mandate, to minimize infringements on rights

Right-wing Librarianies are very much for the laws. We aren't anarchists who believe in no law, no government. Hence, the limited government.

Does the government... not protect life liberty and property with physical force? It'd be better to know your neighbors and watch out for each other than to pay someone you will never meet to pretend that they care about you.

I find it fascinating how classical liberalism is suddenly an en vogue label, likely due to libertarianism being somewhat tainted in recent years, especially with its mysterious alleged association with the alt-right.

Well you know what is the difference between a Libertarian and an Anarchist? About six months. All joking aside I know several libertarians who are carrying degrees of anarchist (usually voluntaryist) who believe in adopting a minarchist system to eventually achieve what they perceive as the natural order (pure Arvin Vohra being the most notable contemporary example of this trend. Interesting parallel with your notations about totalitarian communists.

Communists didn't become Anarchists in the time of Marx, they had been Anarchists since Gerrard Winstanly, Marx was actually influenced by those already seeking to justify Statist Communism like Robespierre.
