At least 30 Palestinians were killed in an Israeli strike on a school in Deir al-Balah in central Gaza, Palestinian health officials said.

The Israeli military said it had targeted a 'Hamas command and control centre inside the Khadija school compound in central Gaza'. Reuters reported that ambulances took injured Palestinians to al-Aqsa hospital in Deir al-Balah. Journalists on the ground reported that a toddler was among those killed.

Why didn't the guardian report on the 2 incidents of failed rocket launches by Hamas this week? Rocket launches fired from the designated humanitarian zone and thar killed 4 civilians????

Every time a hospital or school bombing has been depicted it has turned out to be a Hamas weapon that fell short or the site of Hamas rocket launches. You never ever ever publicize the correction do you, though?

Schools in Gaza closed nine months ago, so someone is lying here?

Has The Guardian ever said anything nice about Israel? Just wondering.

Let’s just ponder for a moment if the empty school was perhaps being used by Hamas as both a political and military shield? Different narrative now, right?

The principle that the presence of a dangerous individual in a heavily populated area does not justify the killing of innocent civilians is supported by various international laws and conventions. Here are some key references:

1. **International Humanitarian Law (IHL)**:
- **Geneva Conventions (1949)** and their **Additional Protocols (1977)**: These set out rules to protect civilians during armed conflicts. The principle of distinction requires parties to distinguish between combatants and civilians, and the principle of proportionality prohibits attacks if they cause excessive civilian harm compared to the anticipated military advantage.
- **Article 51(2) of Additional Protocol I** specifically states: "The civilian population as such, as well as individual civilians, shall not be the object of attack."

2. **International Human Rights Law (IHRL)**:
- **Universal Declaration of Human Rights (1948)**: Article 3 states, "Everyone has the right to life, liberty, and security of person."
- **International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights (ICCPR, 1966)**: Article 6 states, "Every human being has the inherent right to life. This right shall be protected by law. No one shall be arbitrarily deprived of his life."

3. **The Rome Statute of the International Criminal Court (1998)**:
- **Article 8(2)(b)(i)** classifies intentionally directing attacks against the civilian population or individual civilians not taking direct part in hostilities as a war crime.
- **Article 8(2)(b)(iv)** prohibits launching an attack which would cause incidental loss of civilian life, injury to civilians, or damage to civilian objects, which would be excessive in relation to the concrete and direct overall military advantage anticipated.

4. **Customary International Law**:
- The **Customary International Humanitarian Law (CIHL) database**, compiled by the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), includes rules derived from established state practices that also reinforce the protection of civilians and prohibit indiscriminate attacks.

These laws and conventions collectively uphold the principle that the presence of a dangerous individual does not justify harming innocent civilians.
