Had to reupload to fix a mistake where Cuban and Spanish positions were mostly inverted by accident. Enjoy!

Fun fact: Guam was taken without any fighting. Traditionally when nations were at peace their ships fire a shot as a salute to them. So when the Americans fired a warning shot, the governor of Guam mistook it for a salute. When he realized that the Spanish garrison was out of ammo, he sent a message to the Americans apologizing for not being able to fire back a salute. Naturally, the Americans immediately stormed and captured the island.

Fun fact: a group of 60 Spanish soldiers got sieged in a church in the town of Baler(Philippines), when the armistice was signed, the spanish soldiers didn't believe them and stayed in the church over 150 more days in there. After many attempts trying to convince them, a newspaper brought by the negotiators which included a name of a close friend of one of the high spanish ranks, that decided to leave the church.
This men later became "the last men in the Philippines". Until today, every 30 of June the Philippines government makes a ceremony to honour this brave men.

My great grandfather commanded forces in the island of Cuba but was ordered back to Spain in 1897. He went on to join the spanish general staff and spent the rest of his life telling everyone he didn´t lose in Cuba because he left before the defeat.

I wish we’d given the Filipinos their independence immediately. We could have negotiated the use of the ports without conquering them.

As a Cuban, it sure seemed weird to me to see Havana as rebel held and the East as Spanish held 😅

I give tours in San Juan on the war and most people don’t know that the first Spanish strategic victory of the war was fought here on May 12. Rear admiral William Sampson bombarded the city at 5am until 8am, the Spanish responded in kind with their 15cm Ordóñez cannons (not the best at the time but effective). The Americans thought that Spanish admiral Pascual Cervera was in the bay and tried to flush him out. Since the city never surrendered, the Americans retired but maintained a blockade (which was broken several times anyways).

Americans joined the Cubans in their fight against the Spaniards after the USS Maine exploded and sank in Havana harbor. During those tumultuous years, 5, 180 Cuban insurgents died in battle and over 40, 000 died from various diseases such as Yellow Fever. Colon Cemetery in Havana is one of the great historical cemeteries of the world and was built just in time to receive the victims of the Cuban Wars of Independence.”

It would've been cool to see USA fight Spain in 1798, fighting Spain in 1898 is like putting down an old sick dog in constant pain.
