Three and a half years ago I rented a 400 sq ft cottage. I had a small space for a dining table so I figured probably a 40" round table with drop leaves so I could tuck it away when not in use then bring it out into the room a bit so up to four people could eat. That was the plan. So I went to my local church thrift store and there was an amazing gate leg table in about as close to mint condition as one could expect. It looked really old but I was not sure on the age exactly. One thing I noted was that it was out of round by nearly 3/4 of an inch yet the edging was perfect. Old wood tables usually take 50 to 100 years just to show signs of this. I didn't recognize the kind of wood it was but I knew it wasn't oak or pine. The price was amazing at $40. I'd have bought it had there been another zero. I spent a few weeks on and off researching the table and educating myself and I found someone locally who was a bit of a woodworking expert so I brought the table to him to get his opinion. He said the table was beautiful and he was oohing and aahhing and looking like an art expert who just discovered an unknown Rembrandt. Then he told me it was definitely American elm and that elm hadn't been used in furniture making for around 100 years since a disease killed off most of the trees by the 1920's. Then he told me that you can date elm tables with a round top approximately 1/8 of an inch per 50 years of warp. So he estimated the table was about 300 years give or take putting the manufacture sometime between 1700 and 1750. He then told me about the way the table was built in terms of construction method and said that was definitely pre 1800 and then said the specific style of the turned legs was popular in New England between 1675 and 1725 but lost popularity by the 1730's. So he estimated it was most likely built between 1700 and 1730. He on the spot offered me $5000 cash for the table. So that's even more zeros than I had estimated. I figured it was worth between $500 and $1000. I got some advice from him on restoration and maintenance which basically it didn't need much of. There was a little bit of wiggle in some of the joints and he helped me out with that and there were a handful of ink stains, he figured probably from hand made ink well over 100 years ago but we decided to keep the initials carved into the underside of the table. We applied some oil and hand rubbed that with cotton rags and that is all we did with it and I gave him $100 and took it home and I am a profoundly happy camper with my amazing table. Three months later the same thrift store had a set of miss matched antique ladder back chairs which I took to him and he told me that the chairs individually dated to between 1690 and 1850. He helped me take the wiggle out of the joints then I ordered new rush material on line and spent the next week rerushing them like Dad taught me and now I have my dream dining set.

And that is sold wood. You would pay a fortune for a new wood set. A great furniture flip. Im glad you are inspiring folks to recycle instead of going for the new cheap stuff.
