Just keep adding a lil bit of water every time it evaporates it’ll take 30 mins and they’ll be like onion jam because your deglazing everytime you add water

-edit I posted this stoned a few days ago and it’s the most interaction I’ve ever gotten on any platform so thanks

I remember making French onion soup from scratch once and those 12 (yes 12!!!) onions took maybe a good hour to caramelise 🥴 that soup took an eternity and half to make but it was the most delicious soup I had ever eaten!!
The rank onion farts my family and I had the whole evening and day after we’re not as fun 🤣 😬 I’ll never forget that French onion soup adventure lol !!

I always start them off on high heat until the water stops coming out then lower it to low heat. I can get really good caramelized onions in 20 mins.

This may be the reason why you can’t get French onion soup as takeout.

I like to use butter for onions, i feel like it kinda speed up the process just a little bit and i also like the taste better :)

Personally I use a hint of sugar to caramelize the onion's and it goes soo much quicker! Y'all should try it, and the sugar does not ruin it or make any taste cause you add so very little, just a small pinch.

There’s a Food Network tutorial on caramelized onions that says “it’ll take a while, like 10-15 minutes” .-.

Add a pinch of baking soda. That speeds up the process immensely.

One day I woke up and started a batch, ending in the afternoon. It was on super low gentle heat, and got to a very lovely dark sweet almost jam like consistenty. I put in on brioche burger buns and it was so worth it.

Pro tips, follow a recipe the first time so you are not guessing on the salt or use coarser salt to avoid overdoing it. Remember it get smaller/concentrated. A bigger batch of onion works better than a single or half an onion will, aim for 3. It can be frozen for sauces and even more caramelizing later. The best color is a dark dark brown with strands of gummy mushy onions which readily spread on bread like butter.

I remember first time I tried to cook french onion soup. It was a nightmare. Took me 1.5 hrs to caramelize the onion. Didn't know about the water hack then.

You're so right!!! I was amazed how long it took to get onions to caramelize. It's very misleading when watching the process on a video; but delicious.

Okay hear me out, here is a tip: I've been making caramelized onions for years now and I've mastered the quickest and easiest way. First you heat up the oil in your pan, than you add your onions, let them brown on high heat a bit. If they have reached a golden color you're gonna add salt and then the water. Keep it on high heat and dont cover. As soon as the water evaporates add more and keep stirring. It's only gonna take about 10-15 minutes and it's amazing!

I just made it first time using cane sugar, it was the best caramelised onions ever!! It only took me 10-15 mins as well (I didn’t cook them until it really became very small like in this video, the onions stil had like 60-70% of their size). I began with onions, olive oil and some sugar. After cooking it for 5-7 mins I did add sugar and continued for approximately 3 mins. Afterwards I did add the water. Let it sit for a few minutes until the color gets good golden brown and took it off the stove. Adding this to a good chicken tortilla with only some sauce made this extremely tasty!!! 😍

You really broke the npc brains by not using a time that’s divisible by 5.

I've never had onions take over 30 minutes, let alone almost an hour. But I don't do them at a low heat
