It’s an amazing instrument. I own this trombone, I’ve been playing it for over 4 yrs. Rented it new until I bought it. Plays really close to intermediate or professional!

Just got it, played it, and you're right. My wife and I are both experienced trombone players and when she was in the other room, she said that she thought I was playing my Bach 36. Not too bad, huh ? This is far better than any student instrument I've ever played.

I love your tone, not a lot of people have that. I adopted similar playing tone from a young age. I had a professional world class trombonist tutor teach me that omboucher and playing style!

I've been playing on a cheap Bach Aristocrat student horn for 6 years and it's lasted me good, but truth is it's very hard to play in the upper end. I'm about to senior in high school and all my friends are telling me there are serious issues with this horn. I'm really excited to rent this horn and see how it compares!

Hey Paul, I visited the NAMM show 2022. I went straight to the BAC booth. BAC has made a simple DAMN GREAT playing trombone. Thank you for your video, I now know of what you speak. I still pinch myself to see if I am dreaming.

Huge peaceful high-five for a great student model. I have complete confidence in your endorsement and will check this out on my own.

I put some Slide O Mix Light on the slide. Wow ! That really did the trick.

Great video from an ex-77 yr old trombone player. So sorry I gave it up after H.S. !! I put my all into it and gave up a chance to play professionally!! One would think my rear would be bruised from all the kicks I wanted to give it!! I still wonder what my life would’ve been like.

Paul, I'm happy to 'like' and 'comment', been a subscriber for a long time. I wish my comments carried more weight with YouTube. Your Bone Masters series is a national treasure! To have all the fantastic artists interviewed by the same 'correspondent', to hear AND see them all playing with you, brings a continuity that is unmatched (possible exception would be Marian McPartland, but dude, that's some pretty good company if so).

Cheers mate. Keep up the good work!

When all horns were made in places like Elkhart, Indiana, manufacturers had easier access to high-quality materials, and most student model horns were much better than most student models you see today. There is a night and day difference in blow and tone produciton between my Olds horn from Elkhart and new student trombones of my friends that I have tried.

Very nice introduction to the topic. It is so fatal that buyers often have false expectations of the first or second trombone. Every professional can cope with all trombones, no matter whether recently from P-bone plastic or high-end German-Austrian manufacturing style, worth a used Mercedes. Those who do not practice extensively and thus - by the way - learn Trombone, hardly needs an instrument over 500 dollars, more from China from the supermarket. Sufficient.

With us in Germany, the music schools in big cities buy the instruments at the local wholesaler and the shops repair you during the holidays. Most Yamaha, because the German instruments (Lesch or Kühnel) are too costly, because most students carelessly deal with it as with their school bags. In the country, the instruments are inherited - because here, at least in Bavaria or in the neighboring Austria or Switzerland, there is always a wind instrument for generations in the family. There are villages with 700 inhabitants, 500 of which are latent in the local orchestra.

The mouthpiece is more crucial here. Dennis Wick from London is my favorite for tenor. Bach for bass trombones. Personally, I grew up with KING trombones, which was also in the jazz and big band genres.

When I was 16 (1973) I had a used 350 DM (today 500 Euro) cheap KING 3B from 1963 as a student at a German conservatory. Which demanded everything from a beginner, because my father also played and wanted to participate - as a pro in the orchestra of German broadcasting. Thus, I - this brand - remained faithful, especially since I call the remaining inherited KINGS since the early 70s, in maintainable condition - my own.

So every one - used queen - if cheaply acquired, would restore. Also for committed beginners. From nothing, comes nothing. Do not hold off - Warmduscher - instruments.

The point of contact of the sound is - the KING - immediately behind the mouthpiece. Where, in purely concertante classical instruments, the sound responds only at the level of the second turn on the funnel. Either the sound is right there, or then IF IF YES, the room is cleared empty, even without a microphone, when Big Band is announced.

So -nix with it in-shit - in the untrained score when you acquire a KING.
In this respect, beginner instruments - of whatever origin and self-confessed brand loyalty - are to be selected by the teacher, just as the lip texture of the student (soft or harder) is far more important and thus selects the mouthpiece accordingly.

I personally, call 60 mouthpieces - (since 1940) of my worthy ancestors - my own and gladly give you free or gifted to beginners to test for strong-willed youngsters who are serious about this instrument. Thus - the right trombone - is sometimes marginal. The community of musicians and the repertoire counts more.

Greetings from Germany / Bavaria / Franconia / Nuremberg

Almost 60 years ago, a young upstart brass instrument manufacturer asked my then teacher (a top LA session player in the 60's and 70's) to endorse their horns. At the time, the company had no profile in North America what so ever, and contracted their sales with independent retailers (in our case it was an instrument repair shop) rather than music stores who were committed to Bach, Conn, King, etc...

He played them all and ultimately chose one. They said, 'But...that's our student model'. He said, 'Cool!". They tried to get him interested in their pro level horns but they were overbuilt, heavy and unresponsive, and he didn't like them. He said the only one that approached his Williams Model 6 was their student model. Ultimately they never came to terms. My teacher ended up staying with his Williams, but I don't know what became of Yamaha!

Paul, quick question: I've been primarily a classical player, and just picked up a large bore Shires. I'm going to be a freshman in college next year as a performance major and I'm wondering if this would be a good horn for me to use in jazz, which as of now I have very limited experience in. So basically, I'm wondering if this horn would keep up at a college level, and if so how well?
