Thanks - 69yo woman who was taught cooking and sewing instead of nuts and bolts and woodwork at school. Glad we have progressed and thanks to you for explaining the washers - basic but necessary.

Flat Washers - these can increase the Clamping Force. A Flat Washer should be used under a Nut so that the nut does not bind on the assembly it is holding together, that is, hold the Bolt Head stationary and turn/tighten the nut, the nut will rub against the washer as it turns and not mark the assembly.

another somewhat common but less noticed washer are vibration dampening washers, aka rubber washers, you'll commonly find them around motors or for transport, like on a brand new washing machine, it will have rubber washers with flat washers on top.

I try to keep a good mix of washers on hand, but usually still have to go back to the hardware store
because I either didn't have enough or had a surprise repair job.

“Get not respect” I learned this the hard way, , after I lost them during assemble, then thought: what difference would it make? Things become loose and falling 😅

I have an old electric chainsaw
The tension bar was missing a screw to keep it taught in the gear. Do I need an additional washer ( which may have been lost and if so where would I place it
Under bar or atop bar for more tension

Do you need a nut to secure further? I have a Thule bike rack with bolt and lock washer but no nut . Is this ok? I tried Thule site but no help. The bike rack is second hand.

You forgot the ( penny ? ) or mudguard washer ... this is a large diameter flat washer with a tiny central orifice 😝( ? ) ... these are easily purchased ... but ... can be made from coinage ( the old pre -1971 UK penny ( d ) is perfect, and .. totally rustproof ! ) ... however check its date .. a 1933 UK penny is worth £ LOTS, more than YOUR house ! ....
