I visited all these places and just watched what the locals would do and copied their behavior. Whenever I did something that would not be correct (sitting where you are not supposed to sit etc.), Japanese people would be very friendly and tell me how to do it and I corrected my behavior (which in a lot of cases led to very memorable and funny interactions, which IMO are part of the Japan experience).

For example I ALWAYS forgot to take off the bathroom slippers when leaving bathroom and every one who new me, laughed at me. 😂 As long as you say ‚I am sorry‘, smile and return them to the bathroom door, that’s not a problem.

But *this* behavior is unacceptable.

That is simply sign of disrespect as a visitor towards your host.

If this happened then yes the tourists have gone to far would we tolerate someone going into a Catholic cathedral and watch them turn the cross into a jungle gym absolutely not. so while it hurts for those people who want to give proper respect it is understandable.

I respect that move, but when they say "UNFORGIVABLE" i start remember when japan hide his unforgivable actions in the past, lots of blood without saying "sorry"
