Sometimes, you may notice that some coins have ridges on the edges. Why people do that? In early days, nearly all coins are made from precious metals such as gold and silver. This provided an opportunity for people to take advantage of it to get profits. They carefully file off the edges of those gold and silver coins. Each piece of shaving from one coin wasn't much, but lots of those shavings can be added up to a good profit. Since thre are no special marks on coins, it was difficult for others to identify if a coin had been shaved down or not. This kind of behavior was known as coin clipping, and it devalued the coins gradually. To resolve this issue, the government came up with the idea of adding ridges to the edges of coins which can be easily recognized. Then, if somebody shaved off a piece of precious metal from edges of the coin, it would be very obvious for others to identify the difference.
