This was also true for dimes, half-dollars, and dollar coins. These coins used to have silver content, which made clipping more lucrative. Today, we don’t use silver in our coins, but we kept the ridges as a design feature and to help the visually impaired distinguish between coins.

Back when our money actually had value and wasn’t made of junk metals

That's because back in the day, money was actually worth something. Our quarters & dimes used to be 90% silver

Also, if you’re blind, you can scrape the ridges with your fingers and identify which coin is which. Pennies have no ridges and feel flat, nickels have none, but they have a thick rimming so you can feel the sides, quarters have very detectable ridges, and dimes have scraper-like ridges. It takes about 10 minutes to learn to feel the difference between them, but it is occasionally useful

The government liked the robbers idea so much they had to use it for themselves 💀

Back in the day, hundreds of years ago, when gold and silver coins were used, people would shave the edges of coins, so they were subtle. The ridges helped to detect when coins were being shaved down. So if someone tried to pay you with a coin with no ridges, you can reject the payment.

Back in the day, it was pure silver, that's why you can melt those clippings down and sell the silver ingots for more than 25 cents.

Never ask who the “criminals” were. You might end up in jail yourself.

Back in the days, you could plant clipping from coins and grow full coins. Infinite money!

I’m so glad those ridges are there because I didn’t notice the huge dent in the side 😊

Isaac Newton implemented the ridges when he was the head of the Royal Mint

back then the physical money itself was the value it represented, a 10 unit gold coin is actually a 10-unit lump of gold in your hand, what criminals would do is SHAVE OFF a little of the edge. this act devalues the coin, so its no longer 10 units but closer to 8-9 units.
